What I was certain would wind up a failed attempt at an ongoing television show/MMO transmedia project after season one, SyFy’s Defiance is returning next year for season three. I guess I’ve got some catching up to do.
I wanted to like the first season of Defiance — I really did. I watched each and every episode, hoping something would click for me and suddenly I’d be enjoying not only the MMO but the show it was created to accompany. That never happened, so I gave up, figuring it would just sputter out during season two.
Free from the pressure of my intense scrutiny, the show went on to flourish. Rob Bricken of io9 last month called it his most improved show of 2014.
Maybe it’s time for me to pop my head inside the now free-to-play MMO and see how things are coming along? Right after I’ve caught up on season two of the show.

Other than inhabiting the same universe are they actually connected at all?
There were some direct connections in season 1 apparently. No idea about season 2.
There are a series of quests that share plot elements between the show and the game. An example: npcs who leave the area in the show and appear in the area of the game setting, then later on the npc returns to the area of the show with the events that happened in the game taken into account.
You don’t really need to play the game or watch the show to enjoy the other of course, but for people who watch and play it’s a small bit of bonus lore if you like.
I really enjoy the show, i stopped playing the game at the end of season 1.
But the show holds it own fairly well.
The shows ok, certainly better than the shite that is considered tv here.
all in favour of bull stacko raise your hand
After watching Helix I had a small amount of hope for SyFy shows. Then I watched Z Nation.
I liked the premise, and the world. I lost interest when it appeared to be turning into “generic tough, grizzled COD protaganist and hotgirl saves the world from non-generics”.
The game was so average it wasnt worth bothering with. Im basically just in this for Julie Benz.
Julie Benz has to be the milk champion
I enjoy the show and its good to see they get a 3rd season. I have not played the game in some time .. too many other games take up my time.
