I cannot begin to fathom the exact reasons for Mario 64: Chaos Edition‘s creation. All I know is that it is patently, unpredictably nutso, and it’s not meant to be beaten. So of course, somebody beat it.
Chaos Edition is a Mario 64 mod you can install using an emulated PC version of the trailblazing Nintendo classic, and it randomly patches codes into the game that make it go comically wild. Sometimes all the objects in the world start chasing you, like background-shaped homing missiles. Other times you’re a sign, if you’re visible at all. That kind of thing. When mod maker Kaze Emanuar released it, he specifically said, “Don’t take this too serious and don’t try to get any progress done in the game. You won’t.”
TheRetroShowcase, however, endeavoured to scale that blood-screaming death mountain and throw its koopa ruler into an endless abyss. And so he did… after 27 frustrating (and funny) videos. And he won as a sign, because of course he did. Here are some of the highlights, including the final, wonderful moment where all his work pays off:
“What is happening? Does anyone know? Does anyone know?!”
Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I probably would have slammed my face repeatedly on a table like a certain sentient cinder block after 20 or 30 minutes of this torture. Credit where credit’s due: Mr Showcase, you are a madman, equal parts bold and foolish. I think we can all learn a thing or two from you. I’m just not sure if we should.

How in the fuck does the game not break upon itself with the constant patching? o.O Why do I get the feeling this is going to be a new sort of craze? (I realise the actual mod was released a couple of months ago already. Didn’t see the original story pop up)
oww mai gaad
My best guess, after watching the vid, is that the game unpatches itself periodically as well. Also, it does break quite a few times (emulation failures)
Edit: reply fail.
yep. some people have too much time on there hands!
