The answer? A song. In 1989, the British developer Ocean created a tie-in video game for the movie Robocop. The game was released on many platforms and featured an eerie yet serene theme song totally unlike the Basil Poledouris theme featured in the movie.
RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven is having a go at the video game movie business, working on an “Indiana Jones-ish” but also “Hitchcockian” video game set in the year 1914. Could it be anything other than Jordan Mechner’s The Last Express?
I just read the most amazing little write-up by Steve Hogarty over at PCZone. He theorises that BioShock is based upon RoboCop, a sort of archetypal allusion, breaking the argument down point by point. Interesting parallels include conflicts in programming, humanizing flashbacks, big daddies (remember those faceless ED-209′s?), shameful period advertising and even the titles ‘BioShock’ and ‘RoboCop’ when broken down into syllabicate structures. The only element I see missing is the Little Sisters…yeah, my mind just can’t fill in that gap with literary theory.
Hit up the link and give the piece a read, then let me know what you think. I, for one, recently DVR’d RoboCop and will be rewatching it in the near future while annoying my wife with “you SO should have played BioShock!” comments. BioShock = RoboCop [pczone]Thanks Steve!
Battlefield 2142? No, thanks, we’ll pass. In weeks gone by we’d have even booed to your face at the suggestion, but this week, the game gets a reprieve from all the booing. Because of this. This inspired piece of modding genius. [via Planet Battlefield]
You know GRIN? Swedish developers. Did the PC versions of GRAW, and are now busy working on Bionic Commando for Capcom. They’re also busy opening a new studio in Gothenburg, Sweden, filled with new staff. None of whom are working on Bionic Commando. In fact, nobody knows what they’re working on. We do have a clue, though, and it’s a doozy: The new studio is working on a very, very big Hollywood sci-fi brand. It’s a real triple-A thing.
AAA Hollywood sci-fi? Doesn’t leave us much wiggle room. Especially when you consider most of the good franchises are already being worked on. 2001, maybe? Logan’s Run? Total Recall? Robocop? Oh, shit, please be Robocop.
