DJ Hero, Guitar Hero Downloads Dry Up

Publisher Activision is getting out of the Hero business. That means no new DJ Hero and Guitar Hero games (at least for 2011), but it also means no new downloadable songs for the games it has already released.

The official “Guitar Hero Franchise Update FAQ” breaks the bad – but not wholly unexpected – news that after the release of already announced downloadable content, your copies of DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will no longer be updated with new music. You’ll still be able to purchase all the already released content, naturally, but you’ll have to make do with it for the foreseeable future.

Likely one of the biggest reasons for Activision turning off the drip feed of new tracks – beyond the shutting down of the Guitar Hero division – is that there won’t be as many people around to make those songs. Activision is reportedly cutting back at music game studios Vicarious Visions and 7 Studios, with the future of DJ Hero creators Freestyle Games currently unknown.

Activision will lay off around 500 people related to the shuttering of the Guitar Hero biz.
