Japanese Game Sales Hold Tight, Thanks To 3DS, Dynasty Warriors

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if we’d even get fresh sales figures from Japan this week, but we did and it appears that video game sales overseas are still rather strong, with the latest Dynasty Warriors game debuting with a quarter million copies sold.

Dynasty Warriors 6 (aka Shin Sangoku Musou 6, if you have trouble resolving the numbering differences for these games, as I do) for the PlayStation 3 placed first on Media Create’s software sales chart, displacing Dissidia 012: Duodecim Final Fantasy, which is now in second place.

Professor Layton continues to lead Nintendo 3DS game sales, with nintendogs + cats also retaining a top 10 position. A pair of new PSP games debut in the top ten, but there’s not much excitement elsewhere on the chart.

For the bestselling games in Japan for the week of March 7 to 13 is as follows.

01. Dynasty Warriors 6 (PS3) – 253,900 / NEW
02. Dissidia Duodecim: Final Fantasy (PSP) – 64,996 / 351,113
03. Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask (3DS) – 64,996 / 207,885
04. Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan Saisen (PSP) – 24,344 / NEW
05. nintendogs + cats (3DS) – 23,885 / 132,798
06. Phantasy Star Portable 2 Infinity (PSP) – 20,884 / 269,840
07. SD Gundam G Generation World (PSP) – 20,410 / 259,380
08. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP) – 18,554 / 4,370,436
09. Fairy Tail Portable Guild 2 (PSP) – 18,134 / NEW
10. Way of the Samurai 4 (PS3) – 17,143 / 87,523

11. Samurai Warriors Chronicle (3DS)
12. Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Blue / Red (DS)
13. Winning Eleven Soccer 3D (3DS)
14. Pokemon Black / White (DS)
15. Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)

17. Wii Party (Wii)
18. Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition (3DS)
19. Disgaea 4 (PS3)
20. Ridge Racer 3D (3DS)

This week’s hardware chart is once again dominated by the Nintendo 3DS, which moved close to another 100,000 units to Japanese consumers. PSP and PlayStation 3 sales were still strong (outperforming their competitors) and helped Sony secure a good portion of the pie not swallowed up by 3DS hardware.

  • Nintendo 3DS – 96,463
  • PSP – 44,646
  • PlayStation 3 – 32,406
  • Wii – 9519
  • Nintendo DSi LL – 6836
  • Nintendo DSi – 5888
  • Xbox 360 – 1796
  • PlayStation 2 – 1348
  • PSP go – 931
