Gears Of War Creators Don't Like Pirates Or SOPA

Epic Games, the people who make Gears of War, Bulletstorm and the Unreal graphics engine has weighed in on the controversial Stop Online Piracy Act.

A spokesperson writes: "Epic Games supports efforts that would stop overseas websites profiting from pirating our games, but we have to do that in a way that's compatible with freedom of speech and due process of law. Thus, we do not support the current version of SOPA.

    Good on Epic.

That said I doubt it will help as the MPAA and RIAA have, no doubt, paid a heap of cash to have their bill passed.

Hopefully Cliffy B will rock up tp capitol hill with a lancer chainsaw machine gun and "expidate due process" on the evil corrupt senators.

You can't shut down a web site from overseas from the US unless it's hosted in the US. All you can do is block 280million or so users from using it. the other 9 billion people on the planet will still have access to it. This seems to be the falling point that the US government isn't considering

But you can take it's domain name... the ".com" TLD (Top Level Domain) is registered in the US, so they can (and have been... SOPA just makes it even easier) just take over your sites address. sure you can still get there by IP, but even those outside the US will be affected by this.
Of course by doing this they are just pushing these sites to adjust and get new TLDs that are outside of US control but it will still be a pain for them.

But it's every other countries "Yeah , but america did !" response , and the slippery slope to Aus' adopting it.

the crazy thing is that these morons in governments don't realise that all their stupid crap can easily be circumvented.

Do they think we have forgotten how to hand things off to each other anyway?

That we can't do the digital equivalent of burning our mates a dvd/cd...and that's if it gets really bad (which it won't, because there are plenty of countries that couldn't give 2 shits about intellectual property, its a ridiculous western construct that we try and use to continue our world domination).
