Diablo III PvP Tabled In Favour Of A Timely Release

In its continuing quest to release Diablo III sometime before the rabid fanbase burns the building down, Blizzard has decided to drop the game's player-versus-player arena combat feature for release, adding it into the game via patch at a later date.

Diablo III maestro Jay Wilson made the announcement earlier today via the Diablo III website, explaining that the game's PVP systems weren't living up to Blizzard standards. Rather than hold back the game's release, the feature will be held back for fine-tuning.

While we work on making sure PvP lives up to its full potential, we hope you'll find some consolation in the fact that soon, you'll be having a blast levelling characters, finding items, learning the classes, and perfecting builds... and that when the Arenas do arrive, you'll be all the better prepared for battle.

The up side to this is, of course, we'll be getting our hands on Diablo III single-player and co-op much sooner.

The down side? I was really looking forward to the PVP in Diablo III. In fact, I don't think the phrase "really looking forward to the PVP" has ever crossed my lips before now.

Perhaps it's all for the best.

When the PvP patch is ultimately ready, it will add multiple Arena maps with themed locations and layouts, PvP-centric achievements, and a matchmaking system that will help you and your team get into fairly matched games quickly and easily. We'll also be adding a personal progression system that will reward you for successfully bashing in the other team's skulls.

We know a lot of you are looking forward to PvP, and we'll be focusing our post-launch efforts on making sure the Arenas are as brutal, bloody, fast-paced, and awesome as we know they can be. In the meantime, we're in the process of putting the finishing touches on what we think is a truly epic campaign and co-op experience for launch.

At least we'll get plenty of practice, right?

If it means the game gets released sooner, then I'm all for it!

More "delayed less" than "releasing sooner." Poor Blizzard, almost as bad as Valve.

Blizzard's been doing it much longer than Valve has. I know that "Valve time" is the common meme but Blizzard's been doing this since the original Starcraft. Blizzard's definiton of "soon" is rougly equivalent to our definition of "eon".

Thing is though they always do this.

They espouse this when it's ready belief.

Except they never stick to it. Eventually they start cutting things out in order to make release(probably because they are over budget). Which since D3 will provide them continued cash flow through the online store can then be used to feed this feature. Or like most cut features it will never show up(though i think PvP is less likely to suffer that fate)

        D3 is releasing Soon*

*Soon is anytime between now and the end of the world.

    Diablo 3 Now 50% lighter!!!!!

    /troll face

Good to hear. I'd rather the game be working and released sooner with more features to come than have it delayed.
On the other hand whats another few months wait after waiting a decade for the game.

anybody else thinking the PVP part of D3 will end up being a DLC?

No, blizzard won't do that trust me haha they aren't like 90% of developers now and days....

Yeah exactly, the other 90% of developers don't release and sell their games 3 times to get the complete game.

          bioware says hello :D

Yeah, that's why they charge $15 per month for a piss-poor amount of content, cancel significant amounts of patch content and charge $25 for a sparklepony after a box cost and sub fee.

Oh, wait. They're everything like developers today.

At least they don't remove LAN from an RTS and charge a 50% fee on ad revenue from tournament streams of a game which claim to be cultivating as an esport. Or include a real money trading system, and modify the game to ensure that customisation is achieved entirely through items to encourage more buying and selling of items for real money.

          Oh, wait...

I don't care as I will never play PvP. My purchase is solely dependant upon whether I can play this with my wife on our computers across the room from each other.

Fully expecting it to be DLC though. It's the only way they will keep their profit line rising enough to satisfy the almighty investors.

It's actually a good idea. Gives people enough time to flog out single player for a bit until they release it in a patch.

Diablo 3 the game everyone will buy and then rip the crap out of Blizz - played the Beta - absolutely hate the game. It's just wrong - the closest discription I can give is it is too refined.

Like they play test it - see where people get stuck - refine it - play test it - refine it - play test it refine it - ect. But instead of making the game fun it just makes it souless.

With the huge amount of delays you'd expect them to have everything finished. Really pathetic that it's been delayed like 3 years and they still can't get their act together.

I've seen gameplay trailers. Torchlight 2 looks way better, and it's an indie game that will cost $20 rather than $80...

Almost fell asleep after watching someone play the beta for not even 5 minutes.

Terrible game, too much hype, too many delays.

    Move on to greener pastures.

Don't be daft. You can't have an opinion without ACTUALLY PLAYING IT.*

...which I did. I played it for about 20 minutes, it did not get me hooked. This is the opposite of what a Diablo game should be.
I mean hell, the dungeon below the church. I know they're basically bringing what we saw 17 years ago into a new era, but they could have at least made it consistent with Diablo 1's dungeon. It felt like it was a completely different game - and I don't just mean like it should. The gap between Diablo 3 and 1/2 doesn't feel like the gap between 1 and 2, it feels like the gap between Diablo the series and I don't know, Dungeon Seige or something. Something completely different, yet similar.

*this whole line was a joke, don't be offended by it or take it seriously at all

Oh dear. That doesn't sound good to me at all. I'm hankering for this game. I get that Torchlight is awesome but I just don't dig it like I dig Diablo!!

If you look at the last round of delays, and their reasoning; they basically only removed features or aspects of the game - and added nothing, despite the beta being pretty playable.

My guess - they're stalling for a console release.

I've put about 8 hours into the beta and i couldn't disagree more with the posts above. There's only handful of games that make you loose track of time and D3 definitely makes you do that. i love the fact that your character says more than two words and it seems that the story is emphasised a whole lot more. It won't set the world on fire but if you liked D1 and D2 you'll have fun in D3 :)

    this is Jay Wilson

known as the "shut up pvp guy" guy, basically the pvp must of been REALLY GOOD but he cut it because of its impact on the pve game

that's fine i guess, diablo is a pve game but i still think hes deluded
