Just How Much Of The New Smash Bros. Is Namco? A Lot, Apparently.

So there's a new Super Smash Bros. game in development, and it sure sounds like Namco is doing the vast majority of development. Listen to what Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai said about the upcoming game:

Currently, the prototype prepared by Namco Bandai Games and Namco Bandai Studios' special team looks pretty good, and it's working great. In order to take advantage of the fact that there will be versions for two different systems, and to maximise and offer fun new gameplay elements, the entire team is going to work hard together.

So, from the sound of it, Namco Bandai isn't only doing the heavy lifting, it's doing all the lifting. Sakurai, of course, is helming the project, but make no mistake, Namco Bandai is developing it.

Namco's Masaya Kobayashi chimed in on who from Namco is working on the title:

In order to make Mr. Sakurai proud, we will take on this project with NAMCO BANDAI's best staff! Yoshito Higuchi, the producer and the director of the "Tales" series, Tetsuya Akatsuka, producer and director of "Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs.," the art director/sound director of the "SoulCalibur" series, the main development team staff from the "TEKKEN" series…and that's just for starters. All the top creators from NAMCO BANDAI are gathered here to create a never-before-seen dream team for this project. We will fully utilise our experience and knowledge in action/fighting game development, technical capability, and organizational strength, and we hereby promise you that we will develop the best and most powerful "Super Smash Bros." title ever! Don't miss it!

I guess this means no Bandai Namco characters in Sony's version then.

Wow, that's quite a Namco development dream team!

Hopefully we'll get some interesting Namco Bandai crossover characters.

If Jin Kazama is a secret hidden character in this I will laugh

The Prince from Katamari which started on the PS2 would have been great for the Sony version, but ultimately would fit well into either game.

Don't think I'm that much of a fan of most of Namco's work. Colour me sceptical.

So you're using devs for Soul Calibur on a Smash Bros. game? Although they are quite similar, there are important nuances to Smash Bros that I'm concerned might be overlooked.
Don't have a gripe with Namco so far, so hopefully that can continue!

Hopefully they don't try to change it into a generic fighter; the differences are what make SSB great.

Namco's experience with Fighting games (Tekken & SoulCalibur) +Nintendo's Swag + Great Characters from both devs = pure epicness

I think I'm okay with this, but they better not change the fighting in any way, shape or form.

I am concerned about them announcing them just after talking about how they are starting to embrace DLC. Namco isn't exactly known for being generous about what you can and cant play on the disc you bought.

Oh what. My dream Smash Bros. game is a full SEGA VS NINTENDO game. O well maybe next time. Will def. be a good game still.

I hope the game doesn't get flooded with namco bandai charectors that would be a tragedy 1 or 2 will do.
