Monkey Island Creator Wants To Talk To Disney About Making New Monkey Island Games

Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge was the last Monkey Island game that had creator Ron Gilbert's name on the cover. It's also my favourite Monkey Island, and one of my favourite games of all time. Only a handful of games mean more to me. From Monkey Island 3 onwards, as far as I'm concerned, something was lost. Now that Disney owns Lucasfilm, and Disney owns the rights to Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert is seriously thinking about figuring out a way to regain the rights to the franchise.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Ron Gilbert still hopes to contact Disney regarding Monkey Island.

"I would love to contact them at some point," said Gilbert. "I haven't done anything yet but I definitely want to.

"At some point I will.

"I would love to get the rights back to Monkey Island and be able to really make the game I want to make."

I'll never forget the ending of Monkey Island 2. I was young at the time, but was so shocked by the twist ending, a twist ending that was completely ignored and sort of stomped over in Monkey Island 3. I remember feeling a little bit betrayed by Monkey Island 3 and the direction it took and often wondered exactly how Ron Gilbert himself would have handled a third game. Maybe I'll get to see that game in my lifetime.

I'll always remember Monkey Island as the very first PC game I ever played. Since then I've always loved the series (well....maybe not 4 and TOMI was okay at best). Would love to see another RG version.

Seconded. Also, damn you Mark - I now have the MI theme tune stuck in my head. :)

I love the MI series. MI3 is actually my favourite, I just love the style and humour. It's also the first in the series that I played (well, the demo anyway... I loved the demo but couldn't afford the full game, then I found 1&2 in a bundle for $30... it was a steal!).

I think they did the best they could to tie the games together, given that they had no idea what Gilbert was planning to do from the MI2 ending. And, to be honest, I like Guybrush and Elaine being maried, and from memory Gilbert said that wouldn't have happened in his version.

I'd love to see a new game in the series by Gilbert, but in my mind it wouldn't invalidate the games I grew up loving. To me it would just be like comics, with their infinite alternate universes and versions of characters.

It's definitely a kickstarter I would throw money at, though.

GO PLAY CHAOS ON DEPONIA! AFTER YOU FINISH DEPONIA!

Yeah I loved MI3 too. 4 didn't do it for me. The flavour just wasn't there. Didn't even touch 'tales' as the guybrush artwork was just too far out there, and I didn't want to wreck my memories of the originals.

My first Monkey Island was number 3, and it *was* my favourite game of all time until I later discovered Persona 4 and Chaos on Deponia (surprisingly awesome, best adventure game of all time and I never thought I'd say that again), and going back and replaying MI2 felt a little weird towards the end, because I wasn't a huge fan of the whole lore destroying twist. But had I played it first, with nostalgia (and working music, the monkey madness CD I bought had no sound and I was too young to be aware of piracy, later I pirated the version with music because I felt it was owed to me ;p), then MI2 would easily be my favourite MI game. I was just too young when it came out. I think I was 4.

No, new Day of The Tentacle... now!

There was a fan-made sequel being made, seems to have stalled though.

I really loved CMI, but I agree that there was a crazy tone shift. I wouldn't mind seeing Gilbert's trilogy completed. (With a CMI-like art direction!)

These people saying MI3 was the best clearly grew up in a different generation. Monkey Island 2 was the pinnacle of the Monkey Island games.

Also, Full Throttle, DoTT and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis are boss :P

MI2's my favourite by far, but MI3's art direction man... :')

      FULL THROTTLE!!!!!

Most badarse adventure game there ever was. Loved every second of it.

Ahhhh the 90s.... it was a simpler time...

"Whenever I smell asphalt, I think of Maureen."

I love that so damn much. :D

And the soundtrack! What a soundtrack. I used to cruise on the highway going nowhere, just to rock out to the driving song.

          Awesome quote btw.

I bet you didn't love every second of it. Exhibit A: The Destruction Derby :D

It's a great, great game, though.

I was like, 15 I think, I was too young to know better. And the derby was only about 3 mins long and not very hard, so it didn't kill the game for me.

          How good was the ending???

Best adventure game ending ever. In fact, I think I need to go dig up my cd.

Never played a Monkey Island I didn't like from the first right up to Tales - although I wasn't too keen on the end of MI2. CoMI is my favourite ever game. It always felt the most piratey to me. I think it still stands as one of the best examples of voice acting in gaming.

If Ron can get another one made, I'll be happy - even if the ending stinks again.

I think Telltale did an amazing job with number 5 I thought.

MI2 would be the best except for the fact that Murray exists. Murray makes MI3 the best of the MI games.
