What’s the point of making a live-action Kiki’s Delivery Service if the cat is going to be CG? No, let me rephrase that. What’s the point of making a live-action Kiki’s Delivery Service?
Recently on Japanese television, the first images of the movie version of Jiji, the black cat, were shown.
If you have never seen the classic Studio Ghibli movie that’s based on the book Kiki’s Delivery Service, here is what the anime Jiji looks like:
Studio Ghibli is not involved with the live-action Japanese feature film.
And here is the upcoming computerized version (images via Hachima):
Of course the cat has to be CG — they can’t have a real cat flying around on a broomstick with Kiki, can they? Well, maybe they can! Or they could do a mix of CG cat and real cat. Or maybe they could have done a totally different movie altogether. The possibilities are endless, really.

Jiji talks though, right? I’d figure it would look a bit awkward if they just CG a talking mouth on a real cat. At least with CG you’d have the freedom to animate the head and facial movements, and give the character more natural expression when combining it with the entire character’s movements.
As for “what’s the point of making a live action Kiki’s”, what’s the point of live action Marvel movies? Why make a live action Lord of the Rings?
