“It was important to us that the game feels as grounded in reality as much as possible”, says Dead Crusade’s creative director Scott Petty, moments before a trailer shows you hacking the arms off a crowd of medieval zombies.
They key to that sentence is “as much as possible”. As in, yeah, the walking undead aren’t real, but the guys behind the game are at least trying to inject a little history and plausibility into their zombie horror game, with a black death setting and levels taking place in reasonable facsimiles of medieval locations like York Minster.
Dead Crusade is a co-op action game split across three campaigns, but what’s probably most notable is the fact that it’s being built using Unreal Engine 4, and that as a result even at this early stage – it’s over a year away, meaning stuff like animation is still a work-in-progress – certain parts are looking fantastic.
Developers Aesthetic Games are hoping to have Dead Crusade out by the end of next year. It’s currently up on Kickstarter.

This is the first I’m hearing of this game. Looks like one to keep an eye out for. I’ve been wanting a zombie based something set in a period that’s not modern day or sci-fi for a while. Black death = zombies was actually the exact scenario I had in mind.
Based off the title and first image, I figured this was going to be about Techland’s Hellraid. Then I started reading; on article alone, it is quite interesting.
The world needs more co-op campaign anything.
I was actually thinking of the same stuff. While almost all the zombie games in the market nowadays only focus on the contemporary world, it could be a good idea to move the setting to the medieval age. But there’s still the chance of making a cliched zombie game with only the medieval features. Unless the developers have fresh new ideas and dedication for this one, I believe it will be hard to see a L4D quality or even Dead Island quality… just sayin’
This will probably get bought by Sony or Microsoft for next-gen console release as well.
