Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD): The Anime

While attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is known in Japan, everyone in the country might not be familiar with it. So, what better way to explain than with, um, an anime.

The name of this short, seven-minute anime is To Correctly Understand ADHD (ADHDの正しい理解のために or ADHD no Tadashii Rikai no Tame ni). It is in Japanese, and there are no subtitles. Sorry!

Recently, the anime, which is from a few years back, appeared on popular blog BuraBuraBrowising to explain an ADHD thread on 2ch, Japan’s largest internet forum.

No, he’s not dead. Kid won’t wake up!

And instead of leaving for school, he ends up reading manga.

And it’s hard for him to focus at school.

Sometimes, the kid gets lost in his own world.

But… the anime says parents need to be understanding! That these kids try their hardest at some things, but other things might be difficult for them.

The comments on YouTube show that ADHD still isn’t as well known in Japan as, say, it is in the U.S. “What’s ADHD?” wrote one YouTube user in Japanese. “This is a disease?” chimed in another. “This is a bad kid,” added yet another. “I want them to make more anime like this,” quipped a YouTuber.

Some commenters, however, talked about how they or family members had ADHD and how they have dealt and suffered with it. There’s also a live-action movie, to explain adults with the disorder — both of which do a pretty good job of doing so.
