Friends, I have spent this Monday morning in a black hole. I’ve only just found the gumption to climb myself out.
It started with this, an old Australian ad for the Atari 2600 and it got worse and weirder from there.
Please join me on this journey. The journey of the weirdest Australian video game commercials I could find on YouTube.
I have a few favourites. The Intellivision ones are hard to beat and SEGA ads have NOT aged well. Also, Commodore 64 ads are Australia’s greatest cultural export.
Enjoy!
Atari 2600
Intellivision
Commodore 64
Master System
Mega Drive
Game Gear
NES
SNES
Nintendo 64

I’m having the most radically bodacious experience with these old commercials.
I’m a bit confused at the second atari one… It says three free games multiple times but lists four?
It’s basically saying buy the Atari 2600 with a game as a bundle and get 3 additional games free of charge.
“Sonic 2 – get in 2 it!” – still pops up in my head every now and then, haha!
I think my favorite Australian video game TV commercial would have to be the Nintendo 64 seeing a huge lineup of games coming to the Nintendo 64 and one of my favorite Nintendo 64 video game commercials was The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time which was recorded on the Dennis The Menace tape that my parents recorded and kept for me since I was a little boy the video game TV commercial had fire on the ad with the voice over man saying Get a Sword. Meet a Princess. Find a Horse. It’s time to start training. The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Coming Soon. So yes Kotaku I remember watching that old Nintendo 64 TV commercial for The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time it felt like watching a movie trailer for films like Lethal Weapon 4 when The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time came out in 1998 now fast forward to 30 years later and The Legend of Zelda is still one of our favorite video games for Zelda fans like me and playing as Adult Link commonly known as the Hero of Time even better Nintendo are still working hard and I’m very proud for what they have done over the past 30 years I say well done Nintendo keep up the good work.
Wow, i actually remember some of the ads for NES, SNES and onwards.
I forgot how they sometimes took the piss out of the competition, i strangely miss that kind of banter in ads.
