Upcoming Mod Wants To Take GTA 5 To Space

Aliens? That’s old hat, baby stuff — a rack of old hats made for babies. Modders have decided to turn Rockstar’s small step outside the bounds of planet Earth into a giant leap.

Grand Theft Space is a GTA V mod being made by sollaholla and a team of ten other modders. It isn’t done yet — and may never be done, because big mod projects can sometimes kerplode at the slightest provocation — but what they have got so far looks impressive:

There are already a few space-y mods for GTA 5 (and a Kevin Spacey mod for GTA 4), but sollaholla and co don’t think those are good enough. “I’ve seen map-editor satellites and space ship looking vehicles — the whole 8.23m,” wrote sollaholla. “But nobody seems to have ever made it so you can actually go in space. So I said, ‘Screw it, I’m gonna make a space mod.’”

Right now, the mod team is hoping to offer space flight, four missions (by launch), combat against aliens, and the ability to explore planets. Their main objective, though, is to create a foundation for other modders to add content and assets to. All that said, it’s important to keep things in perspective: these are sky-high ambitions, and many mods crash and burn before ever leaving the atmosphere.

Still, videos suggest that the team continues to soldier on after six months of hard work. Perhaps we’ll put a (virtual) man on Mars sooner rather than later.
