In a movie that adds a lot to the galaxy far, far away, Rose Tico is an important new window into the world of Star Wars: The Last Jedi — and actress Kelly Marie Tran is clearly having the time of her life now that the movie is out. But a new behind-the-scenes featurette lets us see the moments that secured her place in the cast.
Included in this featurette about Rose’s character are reactions to one of the final hurdles Tran faced before being offered the role — a chemistry test with John Boyega, to see how she bounced off of the actor she’d be spending most of her time with while filming the movie.
We know how well it went — because, duh, the movie’s out now — but it’s still fascinating to see those early days, as well as Johnson’s initial reaction to the actress that would eventually bring Rose to the big screen, and become a key player in the future of Star Wars going forward. It’s almost too sweet to watch her excitement to get started.

God I hated her character. Just felt so weird and forced, and the line near the end (no spoilers) was fucking cringe as hell.
I don’t think the idea behind the character is that bad and I think Kelly herself did a great job of it – the writing for both her character and Finn was pretty rubbish though.
Yeah I agree. Unless there is some major reason why there is now this love triangle thing with Rey, Rose and Finn they should have made this movie 30 mins shorter and completely dropped Rose as a character.
If they took her entire story arc out, the movie would of been half an hour shorter (which would be a good thing) and you wouldn’t even notice – it contributed absolutely zero to the story.
Her character was fine. It was just the one line at the end that felt out of place and forced.
I liked her character right up until the end. It says how good the character and the actress was that I liked her all the way through the earlier parts of the movie where her and Finn’s storyline just feels out of place and pointless. If they’d had their own standalone star wars heist film it would have been way better.
I think she has been a great addition to the universe. Plus she is an awesome person irl.
