If you enjoy big, expensive, blockbuster video games, especially sequels, this time of year has you covered. Assassins, cowboys, soldiers and apocalyptic scavengers are all headed our way again. • Psssst…December isn’t part of Spring!

This last part of 2018 is stacked. I’m looking at buying an average of a game per week for the rest of the year and I’ll be lucky to have time to finish more than a handful of them. VC4 today is the start of the avalanche.

    • Why not save some money, pick up the ones you will finish at launch then buy the others on sale in 3-4 months during the post Xmas dry period?

        • 🙂 maybe I’m just envious of those with more disposable income and time.

Ive moved to Sydney with a wife and child to go back to uni, so I have limited time and money (it is insane how much rent is here). I bought Spiderman because my little one loves him (has watched all the 90’s cartoon) and its nice to have a game to play together, but that’s the first game I have bought at launch for 2 years.

      • Look, you speak sense and that’s what I SHOULD do…but @mucktard speaks to the reality of my mental state.

    • That actually depends on what seasonal definitions you use. Australia just assigns certain months to belong to a ‘season’ (so December, January and February are Summer) but astronomically speaking, this is incorrect. Spring in the southern hemisphere should last from the Vernal Equinox (September 23rd this year) until the Summer Solstice (which this year is December 22nd).

This is a US article, and the US uses Astronomical seasons rather than the arbitrary definitions we use in Australia. This is actually the release calendar for Fall/Autumn in the US, so it includes stuff releasing in December because the US uses a more accurate definition for the season. When reposted on Kotaku AU they merely flip the season from Fall to Spring.

      • I believe we use the months as the start/end of seasons due to our young diggers in WW1, and making it easy for them to know when to change uniforms.

It blew my mind when I realized most of the world doesn’t do it like this. And it explains why most of March feels like Summer in Australia.

        • Apparently it wasn’t the WW1 troops changing uniforms, it was the New South Wales Corps who established the convention in the late 18th century.

  • Question: are these Australian dates, or do we wait an additional 12-24 hours to catch up to EU/US time? I will be sad face if VC4 isn’t there waiting for me to buy when I get home from work today!

  • In the pleasant & unusual position of there not being a temendous amount of games between now & xmas i’ll be looking to pick up; Warriors Orochi, RDR2, Valkyria Chronicles & Hitman are the ones I’m sorely tempted by, with a few other ‘double dips’ making eyes at me (go away Diablo, please!) & AC a sale purchase in a years time…

Have noticed over the past couple of years actually that Q1 seems to be more of a wallet drain for me personally, think that trend looks like continuing over spring/summer?

Noticed a few people talking about Destruction Derby in the Playstation Classic article the other day; Wreckfest is in a similar mould to that & the (decent) Flatout games & I can very much recommend (Nov 20th)

  • so for me it looks odessy on the 5th, then nothing until the nov 27th for Darksiders 3, then December 4th for just cause 4. Im Skipping fallout76 until private servers and mods become a realilty

    • Pretty much the same for me – Valkyria today, Assassin’s Creece, then Darksiders 3 and I’m done for the year. Going to pick up a couple others along the way (esp. The World Ends With You) but I can’t see myself having time to play them for a while.

  • I don’t understand why we have all these games stacked at this time of the year. Wouldn’t it make more sense to spread them out?

Any of these games could have been released in the previous few months and sold better, surely.

    • I assume that’s true if the folks buying the game were always just the ones playing them, but the ‘holiday season’ sees non-gamers buy games for gamers, which increases the size of the buying market, if not the playing market.

      • Yeah, holiday sales account for a lot, both with games and films. Generally, it seems people are happy to get 5 games in bulk at Christmas and play them over the next year than get a new game every 2 months.

  • RDR2 is all I’ll need for a very long time. The only others on that list that interest me are Just Cause 4 (although I’m yet to finish 3) and Wreckfest for a little mindless fun.

  • God damn, Underworld has got me pumped!
Ready for some classic old school dungeon crawling.
No hand holding, no maps other than the ones I draw myself. If I get lost, screw me, I screwed up that’s on me.

  • isnt there a symphony of the night release on consoles coming? i remember hearing about it. maybe this time i will finally play that game.
