Skies are an integral part of many video games, the backdrop against which all the action takes place. Even the most underwhelming game can make you want to hang around and play a little longer if there’s some striking eye candy hanging up above.
I started the end of the year roundup of video game skies last year, and looking back through that collection I was struck by how many 2017 games had beautiful skies that year.
The Year In Video Game Skies, 2017
Games love to pummel you with lists of things to collect, places to get to, and enemies to beat. Sometimes you just need to take a moment to pause, catch your breath, and look up at the beauty above.

Bored at work?
Sky tech is getting crazy. No Man’s Sky and RDR2 take it for me with those gorgeous volumetric clouds.
I was gonna say God of War. But then I saw RDR2’s skies again… BeeYADifool!
Still haven’t seen a better sky than in Mad Max, fantastic game. Of course, I haven’t played RDR2 yet..
Those RDR2 screen caps do not do the game’s skies justice.
