Streamer Apologises For Throwing Her Cat

Natalia Mogollon, who streams under the name “Alinity Divine” on Twitch, was playing Apex Legends on camera on July 18 when she took her cat from off her desk and threw it behind her, a clip that soon went viral. Mogollon has since apologised for it, while others, including from inside Twitch, are calling for her to temporarily be banned from the platform.

The incident blew up on social media Friday, where it was eventually picked up by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which shared a clip of it on Twitter to its over 1 million followers. “Take a stand for cats & please remove Alinity from @Twitch immediately,” PETA wrote. “She is using the platform to post animal abuse, which sends a dangerous message to anyone watching her videos. Cats are not props to abuse for more views.”

PETA hasn’t always been known for engaging in debates around the humane treatment of animals in good faith, and there’s no evidence that Mogollon threw her cat in order to gain “more views.” Others, like popular streamer Imane ‘Pokimane’ Anys, had a more measured response. “If I picked Mimi up and I tossed her to the side here she would land on my bed because my bed’s right there,” Anys said, trying to imagine herself being in Mogollon’s situation. “But also I wouldn’t overhand ‘yeet’ her, that’s a bit much.”

Critics of Mogollon also surfaced other clips, including one in which she drank vodka from a bottle and then had her cat lick it from her mouth.

“Hey everyone, I understand the concern and I am sorry for my lapses in judgement,” Mogollon said Friday afternoon on Twitter. “I shouldn’t have gotten frustrated with Milo, but I dropped him on the floor behind my chair. I’m not that strong :P. The Vodka thing was well over a year ago but it was also a stupid thing to do.”

She said that she would welcome any authority that wanted to inspect the living conditions of her pets. “I think a lot of people are doing this because they believe they are doing the right thing, so no salt,” she said. “I don’t pretend to be perfect, and I will always try to do better, and improve myself.“

Over the weekend, however, Twitch’s own director of creative development, Marcus “djWHEAT” Graham, said he was upset by the news and thought Mogollon should temporarily be banned from Twitch. “If it was up to me I would ban her for at least 30 days,” he said on Twitter.

“I would ask to see an awareness stream and potential charity drive for pet abuse or pet charities, I would put forth a 90 day probation post-ban with a no-tolerance period (you mess up = ban) & check ins.”

Graham stressed that this was only hypothetical, and that any actual punishment would be left up to Twitch’s moderation team. But his statements have helped to keep the controversy alive.

On Sunday, Mogollan said on Twitter that strangers were showing up at her home. “Please stop coming to my house and asking my neighbours where I am, she wrote. “It’s actually really scary.”

Mogollon has been the target of online harassment in the past, raising questions about how much of the outrage over these clips is motivated by genuine concern and how much of it is driven by people who want to punish Mogollon simply for being a popular female streamer.

Last year, Felix “Pewdiepie” Kjellberg called the women in a video he was watching, in which Mogollon appeared, “stupid Twitch thots.” This led to an extended back-and-forth between the streamers in which Kjellberg at one point argued that it was Mogollon’s own fault if people called her names for dressing the way she did.

While Kjeilberg said in a follow-up video that he did not condone any type of harassment, the comments under it were filled with people attacking her for how she dressed.

Neither Twitch nor Mogollan immediately responded to a request for comment by Kotaku.

It's great how Twitch viewers are now Judge Judy and executioner.

note the first time she's done something so stupid or against TOS. Twitch is not exactly even handed about enforcing TOS.

Of course showing up at her house is absolutely unacceptable. the reporting features exist for a reason.

how do you think Kotaku will report when inevitably this situation happens again and some dumb shits go to some streamers house at 10PM, try to get inside and get perforated by the welcome gun?

we are talking about the same kind of dribblers that thought swatting was a brilliant idea no matter how many times we told them someone will die then what do you know someone died.

This if anything is what fuel's every drama and blowing it up more than it should. Wasn't the best thing to do but not like the cat was dropped from a very high height or treated the cat the same way other animal abusers do but this is how people view her. People are always looking for that next drama person they can latch onto and throw hate and justify it because of that thing they did even though they may not have seen it but everyone is talking about it so we need to jump on the hate bandwagon and send abusive messages, dox her, show up to her house until they get bored and move onto next victim.

Apologies are useless, they serve the person making them.

If you must do it though, denigrate yourself.

Twitch really does bring out the worst in people it seems...

Only if your experience of Twitch is entirely what gets reported on Kotaku, to be honest.

Twitch is 99% cool awesome people playing games and being generally pretty cool and 1% idiots who get all the headlines.

Should have qualified that with 'some people' but I'm also commenting on people being shit with tracking people down and abusing them. Plus generating outrage articles, internet hate mobs, and entitlement.

Ok, My chubby little girl cat Figaro LOVES being thrown and manhandled, she jumps on my lap wanting to be tossed to the bed...
She also fetches like a dog, so maybe she's not the best example..

    nvm

I watched the video and it's a bit different from tossing a pet onto a bed. She literally throws the cat up over her head to land somewhere behind her. Yes it's a cat and the fall isn't likely to hurt it, but it's not good behaviour.

Not sure it warrants the outrage some people are displaying, but it's not good.

“If it was up to me I would ban her for at least 30 days,”
But Dr Disrespect got two weeks for streaming from a bathroom.
Sure what she did was shitty but can't they at least be consistent?

The cat has 8 lives left, what’s the big hubbub?

I mean, the worse one was the Vodka moment.

We've all been in the middle of intense moments and been frustrated and I'm sure most cat owners can attest to not only their sturdiness but the famous always landing on their feet.

This feels just like people desperate for 1, a public outcry and 2, sticking it to a (female) streamer/popular person.

Didn't she also kick her dog on stream? I don't follow any people on Twitch so I don't really know.

Other than that, showing up at people's houses to harass them is equally not on, don't do what Johnny Don't does.

Lol what an over reaction. I've done as much when my cat tries to wake my up in the morning, and he still comes back 5 minutes later

I don't do Twitch, so I have no idea who these people are, I just came across the two clips (throwing her cat off her desk over her head, and the vodka one) on twitter. My immediate reaction was that I hope her cats eat her face while she sleeps, and that hasn't changed. There is no excuse for animal abuse of any nature, and alcohol toxicity in pets is no laughing matter. It doesn't take much at all to put a cat in a coma. Those downplaying it as "outrage" and "drama" can give themselves an uppercut.

It's a cat tho... Like, if it was some other animal then maybe, but cats are known for there ability to land on their feet. Plus this is PETA, a group that will complain about anything to do will harming animals, but at the same time wants to get rid of pets... as in killing them all. So PETA is not a group I would support or even want to see reported on.

Every time I see PETA turn up screeching about protecting the animals all I can do is roll my fucking eyes...

I wouldn't let that lot within a mile of any animals I cared about.

Yeah, PETA are media grandstanders first and foremost, their practical animal rights activism falls way down below that in the list. You just have to look at their shelter euthanasia rates to see something is up. It's crazy what you can convince yourself is humane when you are convinced you are doing the right thing.

Mogollon has been the target of online harassment in the past

You mean a target of criticism for actions she took of her own volition?

    Criticism =/= Harrasment.

She copy strikes someone for saying the word "Thot" and then acts like she is the victim when people call her out on it.

It is funny though watching the sudden shift in opinions from journos who were previously calling for Dr, Disrespect head suddenly defending this moron.

      Just to elaborate.

Do i think she should be perma banned? No. Deplatforming is the cowards tactic employed by the outrage crowd.

What i want is twitch to actually enforce the TOS on her. Because it seems like they give her free reign to break it.
