Street Fighter has seen its fair share of mashups, but combining it with Sesame Street into a playable and semi-educational beat-em-up involving spelling out kicks and punches? That has to be a new one.
Called Sesame Street Fighter, the in-browser game gives you a selection of six characters (with one locked), including Ernie and Bert as Ken and Ryu respectively. Like me, you’ll probably try and crack out a few quarter-circle-punches before you realise you have to type words to attack, with the successful input of all the required letters executing a special move.
Your choice of character determines the difficulty and topic of the words you have to type, with the easiest being E. Honda/Cookie Monster with “Animals” and the hardest M. Bison/Elmo with “German scientists”. Yep, I can see the majority struggling with that.
Rather than just type the words as quickly as possible, there’s some definite pacing involved if you want to perform your special move correctly. If you stuff it up, you’ll have to start typing the entire word out again, which can be troublesome if that word is “Krasnoyarsk”.
For the curious, the characters themselves are based on those portrayed in the following DeviantArt poster.

Blanka is Oscar the Grouch – the Cookie Monster is the E.Honda substitute pictured.
Cheers, not sure why I thought it was Blanka!
because Blanka is green and Cookie Monster is blue?
Anyone else having trouble with key presses not registering?
If they hit you it interrupts your “combo”. The word kinda greys out a little when you get hit, just have to keep watching and type when they’re not hitting you
It’s cos a hit registers. when your opponent punches hits you (types a correct letter) your letters grey out for a moment, where you can’t type. When your letters are the normal white colour it is time to strike back.
ah, that explains it :>
You start a combo by typing letters of your word in quick succession. While in a combo, your opponent can’t attack until you finish your word or pause typing. So you’re probably finding yourself on the receiving end of a combo.
The later enemies make it quite difficult to start your combos, which can be a bit frustrating.
TIP: Choose Bert or Ernie (overpowered). Spam the the first two/three letters like crazy without having to type a single Russian city name, like some sort of virtual spelling champion buttom masher 🙂
