Our desks say a lot about our work — and a lot about us. Let’s have a look at the desks and tables of many of Japan’s biggest manga artists. These are the birthplaces of some of your favourite manga — and anime.
Below, you’ll see photos of each artist’s desk — as well as one of their notable works. Many of these artists have multiple notable works, so feel free to point that out in the comments section.
The desk in the top photo belongs to Mayu Shinjo of Sensual Phrase fame. Very chic! Some of the desks below are anything but.
(Note that that there are a few replica desks, so you’ll have to imagine the real deal!)

Disappointed not to see Masamune Shirow’s, but not really surprised. He is famously reclusive.
The issue with Shirow is that his home was destroyed by the Kobe Earthquake, and he went full digital after that. So his original drawing desk is lost forever.
Aww, why no Tite Kubo?
It makes me sad that Oda-sensei’s workspace is a poorly illuminated plywood bench. From the way the man works himself to the bone and the profits it generates for Shounen Jump and the Japanese manga industry in general, he should have a state-of-the-art luxurious studio like the opening picture but made of gold and titanium.
Then again, it may be the case that in such space is where he finds his inspiration.
Gotta love them museum replicas.
