Toukiden is the samurai vs demon hunting game that was released last year on the PS Vita and PSP. Now, Tecmo Koei has announced Toukiden Kiwami, an upgraded version of the original with additional story, equipment and enemies.
Toukiden Kiwami will also include all the content from the original Toukiden, making it another in the long line of double-dipping hunting games like God Eater, Soul Sacrifice, and Monster Hunter, that release an upgraded version of the same game. Koei Tecmo itself is no stranger to the release-upgrade-rerelease game — hello, Dynasty Warriors series — but it’s a model that’s served them well.
Said producer Takashi Morinaka in an interview with Weekly Famitsu, “We came later, so with the development of Kiwami, we’d like to catch up with other titles.” Morinaka also stated that Kiwami would have twice the amount of story content as the original.
The original Toukiden sold over 470,000 copies total (PSP and PS Vita versions combined), but that’s still far from Monster Hunter numbers — the lead share-holder of the genre. By including the content of the original, the creators are hoping to increase the familiarity of the game with new customers while offering further and more evolved content for fans of the original. People who have played the original will be able to carry over their save data to pick up where they left off from instead of having to start an entirely new game.
Toukiden Kiwami is scheduled for release in Japan this year. No word on an international release.

Now I just have to wait for Soul Sacrifice Delta, Ragnarok Odyssey ACE and this Toukiden Kiwami. Did not buy the first game because I knew this was gonna happen 😛
Not a big fan of quickish re-releases. I remember playing Dragon’s Dogma, and having an OK time with it. Two months later, the expanded version came out, and I just couldn’t slog my way through it again to get to the new content.
Gotta say, I really liked being able to grab onto monsters in that one.
Playing Dark Arisen at the moment thanks to PS+ but I’m playing a specialist mage so I’m not really game to go clinging on to monsters. Got my meat shield main pawn for that 🙂
The new content can be accessed about 10 minutes after you start. Basically once you get the hydra quest, you can access Bitterblack Isle. It’s the most fun starting there from level 5.
Still not nearly as good as another monster hunter on PSP would be.
I just finished the campaign the other day but I’m not sure whether I’ll pick this one up. At least the save transferring makes it more enticing. I enjoyed it and there was enough to make it different from Monster Hunter but ultimately it did its job of filling my void of wanting “Monster Hunter” on Vita 😛
Worth picking up for fans of the monster hunting genre.
God dammit I just bought Toukiden last week. This pisses me off. Nope screw you tecmo koei I’m not going to buy your games any more. Unless its free on PS+
Yeah I got burnt by Soul Sacrifice in the same way. Especially with the big discounts that are hitting PSN these days (Tomb Raider half price!!!) I’ve given up buying brand new…
They should make it paid DLC like its mission packs and then it wouldn’t be as insulting to the consumers.
Mh4 on the 3ds only… A year away
