Judas Code is the title of a new action RPG from Star Ocean series developer, tri-Ace. Everything about the game’s description sounded pretty awesome to me, until those dreaded three words appeared.
It’s a futuristic action RPG! Check.
It’s from tri-Ace! Check.
It’s post-apocalyptic! Check.
It’s for the PS Vita! I loves my Vita. Check.
It’s mission-based! Lotta those in the market right now, but Check nonetheless.
The multi-player involves card battles! That could be a warning flag, but there are creative ways to build a good game around card battles, so I’ll give that a somewhat cautious Check.
It’s Free to Play! … Goddammit.
I shouldn’t give the game too much grief, considering one of my biggest current addictions is an FtP game, but I’ve seen so many “free” games that use rather cheap tactics to nickel and dime players out of their money through micro-transactions that the label alone carries a bit of baggage with it.
In all honesty, the game could be great. According to Weekly Famitsu, the game takes place after an alien invasion puts a stop to World War 3 by pretty much obliterating civilisation. The remnants of humanity have divided into three factions that are constantly at war with each other and against a new race of humans.
The game involves different gameplay elements including third-person shooting, and card battles. Players can also work with other players for online tactical card battles.
The game is scheduled for release for the PS Vita in coming weeks and will be available for download only.

Judging form the screenshot on the main page, I expected the three words to be ‘Cover based shooter.’
Given that it’s got a card element, I expect F2P to mean the same thing as for Hearthstone.
Why can’t Tri-Ace go back to doing decent JRPGs? They should at least do a third Valkyrie Profile game
This is going to be one of those P2W kind of games.
Free to Play is like a videogames death sentence.
It is possible to survive that sentence, look at Path of Exile.
Yeah, Marv survived the first jolt of electricity, but most people would still die with the first pull of the lever.
Most likely if there are micro transactions they will be for the cards in the mp portion of the game, which may destroy it.
Looks good.
Why why why do devs shove this free to play crap down our throats? I can’t see ANY free to play game where you’re not vastly better off paying for stuff within the game. And I see very few FTP games where you end up paying less in the long run.
All I think when I read Free to play is “Beware of the hidden scam the dev has created to ply more money from you”. Cause at the end of the day, that is exactly what they’re trying to do. Evidence is if they make more money from traditional game releases at RRP….they’d continue doing that and rid the world of this FTP crap.
