Following a surprise appearance by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto at Ubisoft’s E3 press conference, a long-rumoured title is now official: Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is coming to the Nintendo Switch.
It’s being developed by a team in Paris, and is described as a “tactical adventure”. The story sees the Rabbids teleported into the Mushroom Kingdom, where they team up with Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi in a game that… well, it looks a lot like XCOM, only with shells.
Here’s a trailer showing the game in action:
It will be out on Switch on August 29. Here’s a behind-the-scenes video with some more info:

The battles look kinda ok, bit the exploration they showed looked very unexciting.
Still, will keep an eye on this one.
I’d be far more eager for this if it didn’t have rabbids, that being said, I’m keen for some Mario Xcom.
I don’t get the rabbids, they just annoy me. And why one of the biggest franchise mascots would sully himself with the desperation of something that was designed to get everywhere, like, minions, i’ll never understand. Minions annoy me too.
Yup, i’m a grumpy old man. I put minions and rabbids in the same basket as teletubbies.
Hmmm, you’ve certainly got my interest. Need to see a bit more of the game though.
After watching the trailers I’ve literally no idea how the game actually plays and what is going on.
Wasn’t expecting to care even one bit about this being an avid hater of platform games & previous rabbid games but… Ok, surprised that i’m really interested. Looks full of character, detail and is something completely different (xcom based combat aside – which i have absolutely NO problem with).
AND it’s on the switch too which means i can play it on the go? This is my big surprise of the whole conference – completely left-field.
I was legit convinced the leak stuff was a hoax, and that this was the dumbest thing. Now I actually want it.
Though I haven’t actually played any Xcom like everyone is referencing, to me it’s Mario + Rabbids Shadow Wars 😛
Well Julian Gollop, the creator of XCOM made that game, so that makes sense.
Yeah, I’ve always been meaning to check out what the “real deal” is like after loving that game so much, but never got around to it.
