Exploring the gorgeous surroundings of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was already enjoyable for me, so the news that Polish studio The Astronauts is following up on their first-person adventure with a more ambitious scope is heart-warming indeed.

Video games often strive to appear "realistic" in one way or another, but the new indie horror game The Vanishing of Ethan Cartertook things a step further verisimilitude-wise: creating many of its levels by pulling from real-world photographs.
Ethan Carter is a game about stories. It's a disarmingly personal tale, a murder mystery about childhood alienation that resonated with me in unexpected ways. And yes, it was created by a guy who is best known for making an incredibly violent first-person shooter called "Bulletstorm".
Briefly: The Vanishing of Ethan Carter -- a first-person psychological horror game that looks very ambitious -- comes out on September 25 for PC. You can pre-order it and learn more at the official site. There's a PS4 version due out next year.

Imaginary locations are great places to stage heart-stopping scream sequences. Nothing like being lost inside the bowels of a giant monster, an abandoned space station or the burning plains of hell for put the fear in you. But you know what else is really scary? The real world.
