The Week In Games

Something of a strange week this one. There’s a whole bunch of games coming out, but nothing really outstanding.

Except FIFA 10, which is fantastic but still… it’s a football sim. It’s not for everyone.

If I were forking out real moneypoints on a game this week, I’d probably plump for Cursed Mountain. Not because it’s particularly great, mind you, but because it’s the kind of quirky, unpolished but full of interesting ideas type of game I appreciate people still make.

What are you picking up this week?

UPDATE: How did I forget Scribblenauts? It was in my release schedule doc for this week, but then somehow didn’t make it into this post. So yeah, Scribblenauts is out this week!

New releases for the w/c September 28:

Championship Manager 10 (PC)
What Is It? Football management sim from the guys who don’t make Football Manager.
Should You Care? Since the Eidos/SI schism, FM has trumped CM every time. Don’t expect that to change.

Cursed Mountain (Wii)
What Is It? Survival horror set on a snow-covered mountain with less horror and more survival.
Should You Care? Flawed but interesting. Worth a look if you want something different on the Wii.

FIFA 10 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS, PC)
What Is It? The tenth in the FIFA series (not really) and for the second year in a row EA have outplayed Konami.
Should You Care? This is the best football game you’ll play this year.

King of Fighters XII (360, PS3)
What Is It? Veteran 2D fighting franchise gets wheeled out for another bout.
Should You Care? Lacks the depth and content of Street Fighter IV. Plus, online play is broken.

Naruto Shippuden Legends Akatsuki Rising (PSP)
What Is It? Turn-based tactical adventure set in the popular manga/anime universe.
Should You Care? Only if the game title makes any sense to you.

Scribblenauts (DS)
What Is It? Puzzle game that tasks you with creating the objects to use in the solutions.
Should You Care? It’s not the game you hope it will be, but anyone with an imagination will be rewarded with endless silliness.

Sonic Collection (PC)
What Is It? A whole bunch of Sonic games in one box.
Should You Care? Shame none of them are actually any good.

Spectrobes: Origins (Wii)
What Is It? Pokemon-inspired adventure, but with real-time combat and a Saturday morning cartoon flavour.
Should You Care? Surprisingly decent fare for the young ‘uns.

Toy Story Mania (Wii)
What Is It? Mini-game collection themed around a Toy Story, er… theme park.
Should You Care? No, but your four-year-old might.

WET (360, PS3)
What Is It? Super-stylish third-person shooter from the awkwardly named developer A2M.
Should You Care? Oh, it’s definitely fun. Shallow, stupid, ridiculous fun, but fun nonetheless.
