Meet Midas: A Clever, Free Game With A Golden Touch

I was happy to stumble upon the free Kongregate game Midas today. Created by Melbourne-based Kongregate user wanderlands, it's a simple 2D platform/puzzler based around the story of King Midas.

King Midas, as you may remember from Greek myth, was granted the magical ability to turn everything he touched into gold. Of course, he soon realised that this was a mixed blessing, as the food he touched also turned to chunky, inedible Au79.

Midas the game works on a simpler level -- you are King Midas, and you must get to your wife. Cute little messages pop up between levels as Midas reflects on his plight -- everything he touches turns to gold, and to complete the level, he must touch his wife, but if he does so straightaway she'll just turn to gold. So first, in accordance with the myth, Midas must touch the river Pactolus to wash away his accursed ability before touching his beloved.

However, turning suspended blocks to gold is vital for traversing the levels. Gold is heavy, and golden blocks fall to the ground, opening up pathways through the level. Therefore, all gold-transmogrification must happen before Midas touches the water. I'm not super-far in the game, but it's already gotten quite tricky.

Go give it a play; I hope you'll be as pleasantly surprised as I was.

I never really got why King Midas just didn't wear chainmail gloves, the chain would go gold but it would still work as gloves, right?

You just blew my goddamn shit.

Mind you, doesn't stop him from not being able to eat.

I guess it comes down to: is it everything he touches or everything he touches with his hands? And does things that come from him (sweat, eye gunk, etc) become gold? Like, when peeing, would his piss become gold as it comes out?

but that's the brilliance of it! the gloves would be touching the food, not his hands

But then the food touches his lips/mouth.

I'm just now thinking about the real ramifications of that power though. Is it just Midas himself? Or does it include all the microorganisms that live on/in his body? Would his stomach acid turn to gold? His blood? His poop?

I was always taught the version where it's only his hands and whatnot that were affected

How does one finish the credits level?

I assume you can't considering his wife has already been turned to gold.

Great little game, was fantastic t play through during lunch.

Midas won the latest Ludum Dare jam. Congrats.
