Report: Apple Working On A New Games Console?

A report on website Cult of Mac claims that, in addition to Apple's widely-expected foray into the world of TV sets later this year, the company will also be trying its hand (again) at the video game console market.

The site's sources say that "Apple is working on a television set with an iTunes-integrated touch screen remote and Siri-like voice command technology. The TV set will be coming before the end of 2012. rumours and patents have said as much for the past year, so that's nothing new. But that's not all we've heard."

"Our sources also say that Apple's television set will come with an Apple-branded, Kinect-like video game console. The interface will rely heavily on motion and touch controls."

They then go on to mention Valve repeatedly, though with no clear link or statement tying the Half-Life developers to the program, it reads more like speculation (based on more rumours) than a report.

Sure, Valve could be helping out, at the very least with a version of Steam for the platform, but it's not like Apple couldn't handle things on its own. It seems to have no problems selling games on most of its other devices.

The last time Apple came out with a dedicated games machine was nearly 20 years ago. Things didn't end well.

    DO NOT WANT!

Me neither, and it will probably be the worst console out there if it does happen. And it'll also sell the best in spite of that.

The very thought of this console makes me sad for the games industry.

People certainly enjoy queuing up every year to upgrade their televisions.

    Oh, wait.

I dont see how Apple can pull off selling an new 800-1000+ console every 18 months. It wouldn't be that all of an great proposition for Publishers to develop games that take 1-2 years on hardware thats constantly becoming outer date.

So they have had some success with iOS games, so they want to step into the home console ring? I really don’t see this going well for them.

I find it far more likely that Apple would instead launch a new AppleTV, with beefier guts, that allows you to use iPod Touches, iPhones and iPads as a 'controller', and then just uses the AppleTV as a smart-box for iOS games and media playback.

Spot on. This is what will happen

I think they will offer a streaming/ cloud-based gaming service (Steam maybe?) through Apple TV. Hopefully they will realise that touch-controls aren't great for 'hardcore' gaming release a wireless controller for it.

Ditto, and it's a good idea.

Fantastic idea, too bad the games are horse shit.

Apple can't even do a handle held gaming device properly. What makes them so confident they'll do a living room based on correctly?

Unless they have a supreme VR paradigm up their sleeve, they need to have buttons, not just stupid touch screens.

    The Apple Steambox?

Alot of rumors about Apple and Value as of late who knows?

Hey, cant be worse than a Nintendo system.

AN UNBELIEVER! PERSECUTE! KILL THE HERETIC!

Be worried methinks. Sounds like the shakeup of the console market I don't want. I've already read article after article dooming PS Vita etc because of iPhone with its crappy glorified flash games, as developers pull plugs and go from PS3 and Xbox development to phone games and their twitchy touchscreens, and now we'll have Sony and MS pushed out of the gaming biz by Angry Birds HD on MacTV.

Steam running on Apple products. It's gonna happen kids.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least. In Apple's new futureworld, everything comes from iTunes. As stated above by Jordaaan I reckon it'll just, well, what he said.
I don't think the big three have much to worry about if that's the case.

Valve and Apple software and hardware to make a console.

    I could see it working.

The thing is Valve allows modding and cool stuff like that, and Apple pretty much have the entire opposite attitude :S

There are many points why it won't work well.
    - Apple has a history of allowing a game and then removing it at a whim
    - Apple has damaged the industry with their $1 games flooding the market
    - Games could be censored or not released based on their views
    - Apple has no idea about GAMING interface, and want to apply ONE input method for everything
as a result virtual joysticks and buttons suck big time.

This deal looks like it will just use some motion control shit to cash in.
Then again Valve could simply be commissioning Apple just to make the hardware and thats it.
Perhaps they are going with thought control?

Doubt it will happen. Gabe is not a fan of Apple.

Lol what a joke everybody knows macs can't play games.
