When the original Borderlands was in development hell, in the process of dramatically switching art styles extremely late in the game, did anyone really expect it would ultimately result in a franchise capable of shipping 5 million units in just over a month?
Well, it’s happened — Borderlands 2 has now shipped 5 million copies globally, cementing its place as a true bankable series.
“We’re thrilled with the momentum of Borderlands 2 and it’s really a testament to all the hard work that the team at 2K and Gearbox put in to make this a must play game,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “The Borderlands series has never been more popular, and with continued support through substantial add-on campaigns, Borderlands 2 has cemented itself as one of the industry’s mega franchises.”
It reminds me of something Randy Pitchford said before, in relation to the first Borderlands — he was surprised a development studio hasn’t tried to replicate the formula of Borderlands. Despite the success of the first game, by the time the sequel was released there still wasn’t another game in the market that crossed genres in the same way. By the time Borderlands 2 hit stores, the game still had its own unique point of difference, and it has clearly scratched a certain itch for a massive, massive global market.
