EA: We Would Never Ban Players For Not Reporting Bugs

Yesterday, we reported that the EULA on the Sim City Beta had alarming language that made it sound like players would get banned from all EA games if they failed to report a bug. Today, an EA representative reached out to me and issued the following statement:

We have never taken away access to a player’s games for not reporting a bug, and quite simply it’s not something we would ever do. Players don’t have anything to be concerned about there — just some language that was far too broad in the original agreement, and is being updated now.

We don’t know what the EULA is being updated to, but it’s good to hear that (arguably) nefarious actions in one game won’t affect your enjoyment of all other EA titles.

  • Well, that the contract you sign is being updated is nice, but what’s not nice is that they’re trying to equate a statement in a press release with an explicit term of a contract, which doesn’t work. One is binding, one is not.

Besides, they claimed they’d never ever ban anyone from all their EA games for things said on their forums, and guess what happened…

  • If they never intended to ban players who failed to report a bug they may have encountered, what was the purpose of that clause of the EULA?

  • Typical EA. It’s doublespeak, with what they meant being more along the lines of “We would never ban players for not reporting bugs, but we’ll ban you for abusing them.”
