Resident Evil May Get A Reboot Or Something

After 16 years and nine full entries in the saga, Resident Evil may be at the point where it needs more than a fresh coat of paint. The series' producer hinted to Eurogamer that it may be due for "a slight reboot" to try to make it compelling again after Resident Evil 6 sank under poor reviews and disappointing sales.

Masachika Kawata said the "slight reboot" would be necessary to integrate an open-world structure into the game. Whether the series' handlers actually reboot the franchise or introduce a new game dynamic to it, though, something has got to be done.

"Once we see Revelations released on consoles, we'll be looking very carefully at how the title is received and what feedback we get," Kawata said. "We'll definitely be looking at that as a signpost for where we need to be going next."

Resident Evil: Revelations, which released on the Nintendo 3DS last year, is due on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 in May. Kawata also spoke to Eurogamer about the decision not to release Revelations on the PlayStation Vita.

Well, how about making it $30US/$50AU, for a start.

But any recognition that RE6 was a poor game is a great start. I love this franchise and RE6 just gut punched me.

They need to go back to RE4 days, if they want to stay with the 3rd person style. Or do something more like RE2, take it back to proper survival horror with fixed camera angles, and less over the top action sequences.

    * Hire a writer. An actual writer, who can create a story that isn't bull**** and knows how to make dialogue sound like an actual person would say it.
    * Cut the stupid storylines right back. I love RE4 but storywise, it was silly rubbish. Evil corporation, zombies, fine. Midget aristocrats wearing Napoleon's clothes? Yeah...
    * Hire a bloody writer.
    * Give the game to a studio who knows what they're bloody doing.
    * Did I mention they need a writer? That.

The franchise is butchered, and Im left puzzled as to how the game design devolved into such a mess that is so far removed from the original series that the only thing that relates to the original series is the name..... this ongoing attempt to TRY and satisfy POTENTIAL newcomers to the seris and the survival horror genre not only leads the fans away from the franchise, but leaves the new players with an impression of a game that is shallow in gameplay, irrelevant in plot and uninterested in the future releases.

Oh, but of course, lets try and add new dynamics. Instead of adding new features that you think will WOW people into playing them, how about adding some substance, and the same substance that made the original series such a landmark experience for the genre.

An excellent example is the RE reboot on gamecube. Was it flagged as an attempt at cashing in on the original game? NO! It retold a memorable experience and bolstered it by reinforcing elements of the genre it was born in. A creepier, scarier, tension pulling experience that everyone remembers.

Now look at RE: outbreak..... what... was that...... oh thats right, you wanted to add a new dynamic. And it worked out great. like a car crash.

I know that Nintendo will probably never see this, given their business direction has no consumer input in mind. And so ends my rant.

I think you meant Capcom not Nintendo. But otherwise I agree with what you're saying. :)

Hey I even loved RE4...because the atmosphere is scary. You can't call something survival "horror" if it's not scary at all.

Dear Capcom: Revelations was well received because you can kill zombies in it and they are scary. Do more of that please.

If I wanted Gears Of Grand Theft Resident Auto Of Duty, I would just buy a gun and shoot myself in the face for a few hours.

Open world Resident Evil... I dunno about that. It could be a good game, but it wouldn't really be a Resident Evil game. Exploring all of Raccoon City might be interesting. A clone of DayZ would not be.

I was thinking the other day that a great setting for Survival Horror based Resident Evil game would be Rome, or at least a city inspired by Rome.

The city is filled with gothic architecture with many temples and churches, underground catacombs, and fountains all over the city with some sort of artistic meaning behind them in relation to the city.

Plus Revelations established an Italian Character in the form of Parker, so the game could be set as a sequel to Revelations.

    Thoughts?

drchicken hit the nail on the head.

Let's combine the RE4 controls with RE1 horror and BOOM! Instant success... But then again, when has Capcom giving a shit about their fans and what they want.

I have never, and will never, play RE6 or that spinoff Raccoon City shite. Tighten the focus, but open up the world. Take away the weapons, and dim the goddamn lights. Make the monsters infrequent, unpredictable, and nasty.
