   But, I’ve got to be a little bit critical as well: The quality is still far below that of film, which is really noticeable when it’s put in that context. The problems don’t even seem to be on a technological level, but rather that the art isn’t up to scratch.*

   The lighting and image balance is extremely “gamey” and oversaturated.

   The voice work of Ellen Page is great, but that guy on the phone at the beginning – “…tell me WHERE YOU ARE!” is so badly delivered it really shows that it was all recorded separately, something that even animated films manage to avoid… or the voice actor just sucks.

   The characters looks great, but then some of the animation, particularly on the hands and on some faces looks really poor. For a game it’s awesome, but everything else looks so good that it stands out.

   And it’s also a poor trailer for a film, bad pacing and choice of cuts. Still, amazing overall, but with a bit of a re-cut you could probably make this look like an actual film rather than just a filmic game.

   * I’m not bagging the artists, just pointing out that in film, real life does a lot of the work for you, like proper lighting and shadows and movement, whereas these guys have to do it all manually. And unlike animated films, they have to do it in a real-time engine, where making visual changes is actually quite a difficult process compared to the ability artists and compositors have to patch up pre-rendered animation. So the artists are great! But the challenge is HUGE.

      Poor voice acting was a problem that plagued Heavy Rain, too. While I loved the game, that aspect of it was extremely disappointing. Hopefully this will at least be an improvement overall in that regard, even if it’s still not perfect.

      Isn’t the guy at the beginning DaFoe? Dude’s awesome. I agree that this isn’t exactly a shining moment for him, though. The acting in this trailer is pretty bad.

      Quantic Dream, in my opinion, try too hard to make movies and miss the point of games. We’re never going to make better games and use them to tell better stories if we simply aspire to be more like movies. I respect the push towards better narrative, it’s one of the main reasons I love games, I’m just not a fan of the direction they’re pushing.

            I disagree, and in this case there’s nothing particularly innovative about what they’ve done. The point of games, to my mind, is interactivity. Player agency. I don’t think we’re going to see innovation by just writing more and more script to cover interaction. We’re just ending up with fancier choose-your-own-adventure books.

            They can be good experiences, to be sure. But I still don’t think it’s the right end goal.

         Oh haha yeah it totally is DaFoe, I didn’t recognize it before. So I’ll go with the “recorded separately” excuse, green goblin be damned.

         Honestly, these aren’t really my type of games either, but I like that Quantic Dream are doing it though. When I played through Uncharted, I often felt like the awesome gameplay completely clashed with the awesome story, and at times actually wished for a bit less gameplay so I could believe the story more – killing a thousands guys and hanging from ledges again just felt so gamey that it took me out of it… but then the train sequence happened in Uncharted 2 and I’m like “gimme gimme gimme more gameplay please”.

            Yeah, we’re really not doing a good job of marrying narrative with gameplay yet. There has to be something better than just stalling the story so the player can shoot stuff, or having the player’s interactions amount to picking a path at a fork in the road.

               I agree badger, movies aren’t something for games to aspire to, games can be something much more than what they currently are, but whatever that is, isn’t emulating movies. I think the key is getting rid of the ‘cutscene’. If there is a point during a game where I can put down the controller, what does that say about the experience?

   I love what DC is doing and the direction he is going, but I’m disappointed we still have to have a stories that involve ‘magic’ or ‘futuristic technology’.

   It may just be because it’s still in development but a large amount of those graphics and animations were on par with end of gen XBox games (Still very twitchy and keyframed). That’s not really a bad thing because I enjoy games like Beyond G&E and Dreamfall but it isn’t really something I’d personally try to pass off as a movie these days.

   Is it weird I’m excited for this as a movie, but less so as a game? It seems like it would be something that borders on that feeling of “Move to next cutscene”.

   Heavy Rain was the first game I purchased when I got my PS3 (yes, I was a late bloomer) and I loved it because it reminded me of so many crime thrillers like Se7en. But I have to admit I got pretty tired of the whole pressing various buttons as different times to control certain events. Don’t get me wrong, it was enjoyable and nail-bitingly exciting in most parts but I also like having full control of characters. An example would be the car challenge when the father of the missing son has to drive into oncoming traffic for like 5 or so minutes. It would of been awesome if we actually got to fully control the car. Maybe I’m trying to make the game more like open world GTA style, but I just think the gameplay is too little and the movie side of it too much. But hopefully in this one you get more of a chance to be ‘really’ in control of these characters. Also I’m a big fan of both Ellen Page and Willem DaFoe. Makes me glad I own a PlayStation.
