Kiefer Sutherland Is Snake

Jack Bauer will play Naked Snake in Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, Konami just announced during its pre-recorded E3 press conference. Naked Snake, as you might remember from MGS3, is actually Big Boss, clone-father to longtime series protagonist Solid Snake. But this is a big twist for the series: all incarnations of Snake are usually played by the gravelly voiced David Hayter.

Kiefer Sutherland, best known for his role as super-agent Bauer in the show 24, will do motion capturing and voice work for the new Metal Gear game, which takes place after the upcoming Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes (and way before the events of Metal Gear Solid IV).

You can see video footage of the Sutherland announcement above.

i hope this is a joke.

So you replace an A list voice actor who defined the character, with a D-list celebrity who cant act and has done phone in performances in games such as cod world at war?

You're a fanboy and an idiot. Sutherland has one of the greatest voices in Hollywood. He can also act. Hence why he is an actor. I know more films of his than I do of David Hayter. I'm pretty sure you do too.

So wait, irrespective of their "talents", you believe that a more well-known actor will always be better for that simple fact? So James Dean should never have been cast in Rebel Without a Cause because we couldn't list any of his movies?

Who are you calling an idiot? You're essentially saying Michael Bay's skill as a storyteller is unparalelled because everyone knows his name.

you've seen his work in CODWOW?

And actually no I dont know more of sutherlands films than hayter, I can name every single video game hayter has professionally voiced, and I can name a lot of films hayter WROTE the scripts for.

When it comes to fitting a character which is one of the hardest things you can have in a video game this is like changing a character completely and it's a bit of a cop out.

You cant just go, oh well this changed a character now we need to change their actor...... if they did not have the ability to change the dynamic of a character while keeping what made the character, is that not a sign that they are going outside the bounds of the character?

Yeah he's hardly d-list. But Hayter IS Snake, pure and simple.

D list celebrity who can't act? So the 2 Emmys, 2 Screen Actors Guild awards, and about 15 nominations just between those two mean he can't act? I mean come on... Although I'm surprised that David won't be reprising the role, maybe he just wasn't what Kajima was looking for in this new game.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiefer_Sutherland#Awards_and_nominations

Either that, or David will still be playing Snake.... as in SOLID Snake in the game, being that the time line of this game is apparently set where they have already made the 3 clones of him, and they are out already in the world. Who knows, but we all know how crafty Kajima can be when it comes to marketing. Who remembers MGS 2, where they took Snake away completely? NO ONE saw that coming, not even before the game was out. I would simply say lets hold our opinions until the game comes out, but we are doing what Kajima wants us to... Talk about the Phantom Pain...

That's pretty much what I'm hoping. I'm a fan of both Hayter and Sutherland, so it would be awesome for both to get a run.

That's a good point - we're talking about a game maker who is notorious for trolling fans

Wow. What a load of rubbish

what about the post credits scene? theres always a little conversation thing..
would be quite the pants exploder if suddenly u heard Hayter as Solid there...

Just give us a little lol

I am actually convinced this is exactly what will happen.

In the post credits scene, it will have a conversation between Solid Snake and Big Boss, where Big Boss is recruiting Snake into Foxhound.

Then everyone will be all "lolz wtf" and feel like idiots for crying in the first place.

I'm waiting for the REAL reveal now :)
Could be that naked Snake isn't who we think he is...

Or it could be that Naked Snake is exactly who we think he is, and Solid Snake is exactly who we think HE is..... Two different characters with different ages and stories. Who will eventually cross paths. *gasp*

I think Kojima is still trolling. I mean, didn't anyone notice how the guy with the bandaged face sounded like kiefer sutherland in the brief gameplay video he showed us?

I mean, if you listen when he tells snake to follow him, you can hear it sounds really like sutherland

As sad and shocked as I am that Hayter will (apparently? Kojima-troll might be still having fun with us) not be playing Snake - I honestly don't think Kiefer Sutherland is a terrible idea as a replacement. He does have a particular voice, that used the right way could so Snake justice, I think.

I think most people are going to extend their shock of Hayter not playing Snake to rancor towards Sutherland for playing it. I hope that's not the case though, because it wouldn't be entirely fair.

slightly off topic but last night I had a dream that Kojima was my bearddresser (yes, hairdresser for beards).

I'm fine with this. Hayter's voice was iconic, but certainly not perfect. I'd rather accept a Keifer that sounds like MGS1 snake anyway.

Kojima hasn't released Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes yet...so David Hayter can still voice Snake there.....MGS:GZ in the timeline is before MGS5

    The Metal Gear Series Timeline
    1964 – MGS3: Snake Eater
    1970 – MGS: Portable Ops
    1974 – MGS: Peace Walker
    1975 – MGS: Ground Zeroes
    1984 – MGS5: The Phantom Pain
    1995 – Metal Gear
    1999 – Metal Gear 2
    2005 – Metal Gear Solid
    2007/9 – MGS2: Sons Of Liberty
    2014 – MGS4: Guns Of The Patriots
2018 – Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Also why do I have the sound of the 24 clock ticking in my head??? lol

Didn't they confirm that Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain were actually Metal Gear Solid 5?

Hmm...from what I read..Ground Zeroes will serve as the prologue to The Phamtom Pain and is going to be combined with The Phamton Pain but it's unknown how they (Konami/Kojima) is going to release it

I thought it was going to be a MGS2 tanker/big shell situation: same game just 2 different scenarios?

That's exactly what I keep telling people, they already confirmed this back when MGS5 was announced..... Why don't people read......

I'm surprised, but I can't blame Kojima for it. In the end it's his game, and it's his desicion on whether he uses David Hayter or not. While I've always loved Hayter's version of Snake, if Kojima feels that Sutherland can do an even better job and the game can be an overall better experience for it, then I've got absolutely no right to argue.

I found this quote from IGN from Kojima from the pre-E3 conference:

"I wanted Snake to have a more subdued performance expressed through subtle facial movements and tone of voice rather than words. Furthermore, the game takes place in 1984 when Snake is 49 years old. Therefore, we needed someone who could genuinely convey both the facial and vocal qualities of a man in his late 40s. It's different from anything we've done before."

It's in the video above, too.

Hayter is 44, so while not LATE 40's, I don't see how it couldn't be Hayter.

How old was he (physically, I mean, not chronologically) in MGS4? He looked a damn sight older than 49 there but Hayter was still good enough for the role.

This is exactly why I believe that Hayter will always voice Solid Snake. Big Boss is a completely different character, with a different story. In MGS4, Big Boss was voiced by someone else. If they keep up the habit of telling Big Bosses story, then eventually they will get to his days at Foxhound, with Solid Snake, and they can't have both of them voiced by the same guy.

I see this being the post-credits voice scene. Big Boss recruiting Solid Snake. "Welcome to Foxhound David, your code name will be.....Solid Snake"

I like the way you think, let's hope you are on the right track...

With all that effort put into motion capturing Keifer's performance of his movements and action AND his reading of the script it's reeeeeally hard to think that this is just a stunt. What Kojima is saying makes sense (from his point of view) and having Avi Arad involved also lends credibility to it. I know Kojima is probably jonesing to do something other than MGS, but it's just too successful not to (ie pressure from Konami), so switching it up; working with new technologies and actors is the next best thing.

I hate to say it but i'm 99% sure this is real and Hayter is out. which really does SUCK.

yeah I agree with you BUT, what NO ONE has thought about, is the fact that Keifer is only voicing Big Boss. The reason for it is because of his age. I have no doubt that future appearances from Solid Snake will be voiced by Hayter, do you really think that Kojima has left Solid Snake behind?

Big Boss wasn't voiced by Hayter in MGS4, and everyone understood?

That's true, but all previous incarnations of Naked Snake/Solid Snake/Boss/Big Boss have been Hayter and more or less designed the same (except for the age differences).

I think that was the only time (in the SOLID series) that both characters appeared at the same time, and even talked to each other, so it made sense that Big Boss was voiced by a different person, so as to make it clearer to the audience.

However you still play through the entire game as Snake, the clone of Big Boss, voiced by Hayter.

Well I guess it's like the excuse Ubisoft used for changing Sam Fisher, they needed someone more motion-capture ready. At least here they picked someone with a similar-ish voice though.

But I guess it's not a surprise Sutherland is involved because he was in that hospital gameplay video..... Whether he is Snake, or Kojima is just being Kojima, who knows.

I feel like a crazy person.

Ground Zeroes is part of MGS5. It is the prequel mission at the start of the game.
