Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition Out November 15

One of the best role-playing games ever made is coming back on November 15. Like the enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate before it, BG2 is getting a total overhaul: four new party members, a widescreen version and so forth.

It's out for PC and Mac in November for $US25. Android and iPad versions to come.

From the game's website:

  • The Final Chapter - Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition includes Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn and Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, the epic conclusion of the Bhaalspawn saga.
  • Four New Party Members - Bundled with the PC and Mac versions and available as DLC for iPad and Android, four new characters can join you on your journey. At the behest of his dark patron, Dorn Il-Khan plunders and defiles the Sword Coast. Hunted by Red Wizards, Neera the Wild Mage evades and disrupts the Thayans at every turn. Exercising his growing combat mastery, the monk Rasaad yn Bashir leaves his former allies to hunt the dark figure that corrupted his brother. A mysterious thief in service to mysterious master seeks powerful artifacts from across the globe. Recruit them, use their powers, and uncover over 30 new locations.
  • The Black Pits 2: Gladiators of Thay - Explore the tactical depth of high-level Dungeons & Dragons combat. Undermine your captors and prey upon their weaknesses while you dodge traps and battle for your life against Demi-Liches, Mind Flayers, and Githyanki.
  • Easy Multiplayer - Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition makes it easy to find, list, and join multiplayer games, even while behind a firewall.
  • Widescreen and More - Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition features full widescreen support, remastered area artwork from original renders, and a host of other interface and gameplay improvements.

Glad this is coming out around when uni begins to wrap up. Aside from Half-Life 2 this was the second last boxed PC game I ever bought, so colour me excited!

Great news! I take this to mean that they are resolving the legal issues that halted sales of the extended edition of Baldur's Gate recently.

Does anyone know whether old character saves will work with these new versions? Did anyone try with BG1 Enhanced?

I wasn't able to test it on that one, because those saves were long consigned to eternity, but I still have some BG2 saves from trying out some of the mods and fixes, etc. from a few years ago. Basically I have the whole Throne of Bhaal expansion left to finish.

It would be great to pick up and play with the new version!

      unlikely, too much new code.

        Yeah, that's what I thought.

However, I just did what I should have done in the first place, and searched and it seems like they may actually work!

Some other threads say the opposite, so who knows. But it's a start!

yep old save games from the original version of BG1 did work with the enhanced edition. Had a lvl 5 fighter tucked away on an old burned CD.

If your old saves included mods and fixes it will only increase the amount of possible conflicts.

Imo if you have to hex edit a file to get it to work it'd probably be less hassle to just make a fresh start in the new version.

Some of those areas look like they're lifted from Icewind Dale.

I never bought BG1:EE, I played and modded those games for so many years all I have to do is think back and I can imagine a pretty complete playthrough of the series, never really saw a need for an update.

Hopefully they can get the Android version of both games done soon... BG1:EE for Android has only been "Coming Soon!" since November last year...
