What do you do when the future turns out shitty? You go back to the past. This time, it’s the developers of gorgeous first-person puzzle game Reset who are jaunting back through the timestream. Don’t worry, there isn’t any Terminator-style nakedness.
Reset‘s been on our radar for a while now but the two-man team at Theory Interactive hasn’t offered up much in the way of details about their ambitious sci-fi noir title. We know the when of Reset — which happens sometime in a technologically advanced future — but where does it take place?
Is this Earth or some far-off planet? “Reset happens on Earth, in the not too distant and not too far future,” said writer/artist Alpo Oksaharju. “[Players will be travelling] on a fictional island in the Galapagos archipelago. It’s an open-world environment roughly 16 square kilometers in size.”
And those wanting to really feel like they’re piloting a mech through an eerily quiet milieu will be happy to know that Reset will be supporting the Oculus Rift. Oksaharju, who’s making the game with programmer/composer Mikko Kallinen, told me that Reset won’t have any combat, making similar in that respect to games like upcoming horror title The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. But, where that game is more in the occult-tinged psychological drama vein, Reset‘s inspirations come from creations that tease the audience with an air of mystery.
“We grew up in the eighties and nineties so a lot of stuff automatically comes from that era. All the usual suspects are there in the background, stuff from George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and the likes,” Oksaharju said. “But Reset is more enigmatic than your basic sci-fi blockbuster. It’s what I like to call a ‘popular indie’ title. If compared to movies, the form and essence is more on the Moon, Cube, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner side rather than, say, Star Wars. On the gaming side, Portal has inspired us greatly.”
Theory’s time travel vision is in its last days of a crowdfunding campaign so, if you want to its stark beauty to become a reality, head over to the IndieGogo page and lend your support.

I backed this as soon as I could – looks great, get on board people!
But if his future self is going to go back in time and jump on the truck then he would already be there ready to jump on when he first moves the truck over…
The graphics tech of this game looks AMAZING, but at the current rate, it’s not going to get backed in time.
Head over to http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/reset–4 and lay down some cash if you want to see it come to fruition. And while you’re there, check out that amazing “Atmosphere Tech” video. (or I can just link it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ygZCDoCVec) 😀
The “Who are We” photo on their funding page is a big mistake I think. I know people like to look quirky, but a photo of some serious development work underway with concept art on the walls and 3D models on the computer screens would have been way more re-assuring. When asking for money, you don’t want to look too quirky…
Graphics look ok but the game looks cool.
