That would have been shock of the year if GTA 5 hadn’t got it.
It would have been like that year when Avatar was supposed to win best picture, but then the award went to some film no one had heard of!

glad Bioshock Infinite didnt get it. Very overrated in regards to both story and gameplay.
Yeah, before GTA 5 my pick was definately Last of Us to get it.

I liked GTA5, but I think i prefer Bioshock Infinite. GTA was just another gangsta/bank robbery story, seem the same kinda shit at the movies for like the last 10 years.
It was always going to be a toss-up between this, Bioshock & The Last Of Us. Though they’re all great, I’m glad GTA won.
What a joke
Good this is as it should be – I’m sure Last of Us is great but it irks me that being an exclusive I won’t be playing it so out of the choices available to me GTA FIVE is GOTY. Not only that but it is the technical achievement of this generation.
If you can spare a few hundred $$$, do yourself a favor, and buy a cheap-arse PS3 and LoU. Its really good. While you’re at it, pick up Uncharted 2 and 3.
Yeah this is the dilemma I face – see the 3 games you mentioned are actually games I want to play but I have zero appetite to get a PS3 at the start of the new generation – if they port them to PS4 that could pretty much seal my choice of new console
I know I’m gonna cop flak for this? Storywise I think Last of us was great, but gameplay wise, I guess I was left wanting after a while. It felt *very* rinse and repeat after a while. The story was what kept me going though. They crafted a fantastic world and a great story but the mechanics just felt very repetitive.
GTA V, yeah we all know it would get it, but I think seriously, AC4 was a real contender near the end of the year. A game we all wrote off that came out and damn well surprised us all. A game that was FAR better than it had any right to be given its yearly release status.
I’m happy with GTA V getting it though, I’ve sunk an almost offensive number of hours into Online and look forward to more in the future when the mythological heists get added to the Online part…
I totally agree. Great writing aside, Last of Us was just another third person shooter — and not even a great one. Good writing isn’t enough for a game to be GoTY.
The graphics are second to *none*. I’ve barely seen better on the PS3 in some of the scenes. Others were a little *meh* but some vistas in it were breathtaking. The gameplay was generic at times though. *shrugh* Loved the story though, especially the ending.

It should have gone to The Last Of Us. At least Naughty Dog got developer of the year and that Joel-Banderas from their acceptance video was awesome.
(my opinion) gta5 was probably the most disappointing game I’ve pre ordered and paid full price for all year. It looked nice, it had some cool things in it but it was the same shit different number with the exception of playing golf and dying online with the worst game community I’ve ever played in(when it worked). I don’t see the big deal everyone makes about it. Also the story was very forgettable. The last of us is my game of the year.
