Lord Helix Makes A Most Unexpected Return In ‘Twitch Plays Pokémon’

It’s not what you’re thinking. Heck, it’s probably not what you’re expecting, either. The latest run of ‘Twitch Plays Pokemon‘ — which has thousands of people banding together to beat Pokémon Crystal — has had a most amazing (and unexpected) turn.

As some of you that have played Pokémon Crystal know, after you beat the main portion of the game, if you visit Mt. Silver, you can face off against Red — the protagonist and champion of Pokémon Red. Normally, Red is supposed to have a Pikachu, an Espeon, a Snorlax, a Venusaur, a Charizard, and a Blastoise. A pretty formidable super team, no? The Red that Twitch Plays Pokémon found does not have this team. Instead, this is what players saw the first time they faced off against Red:

Zapdos? What’s Zapdos doing here?

Guess what. Red’s team is actually Twitch’s original team, back when they first beat Pokemon Red — complete with Helix, Bird Jesus, ATV, and the rest of our old pals:

Amazing, right? I’m guessing whoever made the stream edited Red’s team so that this would happen, because it’s not supposed to happen normally. Here’s Twitch’s current team, for comparison’s sake:

Amusingly enough, the first time Twitch players faced off against this new version of Red, they couldn’t win. Twitch’s original team is actually not that bad! Heck, Red himself ain’t such a bad trainer when he doesn’t have hundreds of thousands of people telling him what to do — much to the dismay of Twitch, I’m sure. It makes for an epic battle, though!

Right now, Twitch players are grinding and trying to make their way back through Mt. Silver so that they can face off against Red — their biggest and toughest challenge yet — once more. Which is to say, the current goal is to get strong enough to defeat Lord Helix himself. We revived him, and now we have to fight him. It’s kind of perfect, no?
