Titanfall: pretty great game, yeah? Well, with one exception — the shoddy matchmaking system that continually fails to pit players against similarly skilled players. The good news is that thanks to an update, that’s gonna start changing.
Here’s what the new matchmaking update brings:
1. Searching for teammates and opponents will now sometimes take more time to look for players that are a good skill level match, rather than purely prioritizing speed over quality. This will give us more time to build better teams and create closer games that are worth staying in for a longer period of time.
2. Rather than playing against the same opponents over and over, the game will periodically split the teams apart and search for new opponents for each team. This means if one team is dominating, we will update the skill for all of the players and then find each team a better suited match for the next round. Did you lose to a really great team? We’ll make them disappear and replace them with a new opposing team – and they will have no idea that you just got your butts kicked. This should end some of the frustration with playing for extended periods when you’re having an off night.
HOORAY.
The changes are immediate, but you have to play in the new “Improved matchmaking (Beta)” playlist, which is under “Play Classic MP.” They expect to expand the changes to other playlists after some observations and tweaks.
Here’s hoping this means I get put into fewer matches where the entire enemy team has like 5 generations on me. Geeze.

Seriously? Trying to find enough players to finish the campaign is already horrible…
This is why I made sure I played through the campaign in the first fortnight. I couldn’t imagine it getting any better. I know I’ll never go back.
Yeah – the campaign was seriously flawed. Two days after release, I was struggling to finish the campaign because the game couldn’t find anyone on the same level as me in the IMC campaign. I wouldn’t have even bothered with it, except you have to complete it to get one of the Titan chassis.
set your area to US. You’ll have lag, but you’ll find people.
This is a separate game mode under Classic. Currently it doesn’t affect Campaign in any way, and I don’t know (but doubt) that this will be implemented in Campaign.
Yeah I just noticed that the other day 😛
I didn’t bother going into classic until I’d finished both sides of the campaign (unlocked all the Titans) so I hadn’t seen it before.
Queue times for Classic Attrition seem to be way better then the campaign but I tried ‘Last Titan Standing’ and that didn’t seem to be going anywhere for a good 10-15min.
LTS matches can go for a long time (compared to other modes) so they’re tougher to find. Same goes for Pilot Hunt. I usually queue for either Attrition or Variety Pack which will always get things going quickly.
I would rather if you could party with more than 6 people pre game… that would be better
yeah not a lot of people playing campaign, and then when you do find enough players someone is always on an earlier map, so you end up playing the same map over and over again! Its a miracle I ever made it to the end of the militia campaign, and I am really relucatant to start the IMC campaign now.
Don’t you play the IMC campaign first?
It picks randomly. Then when you finish that campaign, it’ll put you on the other side
I think it might be random. I played IMC first, finally finished Militia last night but a friend of mine said he had Militia first.
Actually that makes sense, otherwise there wouldn’t ever be an opposing team to begin with!
It’s random, I started Militia. Notably, I finished all but one map as IMC, I got put in a game on the ‘last’ map and it qualified me for finishing the campaign.
Yeah. You’d think they’d just use the Classic players to fill the gaps. If Campaign players need an enemy team for an Attrition match, why not bring in players queuing for Classic attrition for a single match?
i did the campaign pretty soon from launch and got through it all ok
i went back with a mate and had heaps of problems trying to do the militia campaign.
gave up in the end
So the 90sec wait between rounds wasn’t enough? Now it’s going to add more time?
I never care if my team gets flogged. I have so much fun it doesn’t matter to me.
I haven’t been in a team that has been flogged for more than two rounds yet anyway. Either the other team will have players drop and be replaced, or my team will, sorting out the balance.
I’ve only had one opposing team that were clearly all a party, and they absolutely dominated, with pretty much the whole opposite team dropping between matches.
That’s exactly the same attitude I have.
I just have fun calling down the Titan and making WOMP WOMP noises when I walk around in it 🙂
I want to know why they aren’t loading the level in all that time. Probably an Xbone thing.
Just one time it’d be nice to get an FPS like Titanfall where the developers build it solely for PC and give everyone else the middle finger. It seems like whenever we get a PC-only shooter it’s riddled with bugs and other compatibility issues. I mean, is it really that hard to say to yourself, “Oh hey, what about how a lot of PC guys have dual-gpu setups? What about how a lot of PC guys have rigs that far exceed the capabilities of consoles?” Why are we never catered for?
I know we get games like ARMA2 and Planetside 2, and they’re both excellent games in their own right, but they have problems.
*end rant*
Because we are about 15% of the market.
Oh right, “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.”
Surely though, it must be possible for the developers to take a few extra hours to ensure the product is fully optimised right? To stop all the bitching and moaning right? To ensure a higher review score right? Not that Titanfall is exactly I suffering in the review department.
You said you want a game solely built for PC. If they tell 85% of their potential market to go and get loved vigorously, they shoot themselves in the foot. It has nothing to do with the needs of the many. It’s the needs of the company. They make a product in order to sell the product. they aren’t going to actively court disaster by pretending that the vast majority of the market don’t exist.
Titanfall is really well optimised for PC. It was probably the smoothest big PC multiplayer launch in 5 years. I want better PC optimisation as a rule and I don;t like being an under-served portion of the market, but I just don’t understand what you are angry about with this.
Fair point but how can you say it’s well optimised?
No server browser, no private matches, no dual-gpu support, insane graphical glitching with v-sync turned on, artifacting with various other graphics settings, a lock-on melee attack, giant font in menus…
Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the game, but it definitely is not well optimised.
No server browser is standard nowadays. It sucks, but it doesn’t change how well the code runs on pc.
Dual GPU support is a subset of a subset of the market. It isn’t the world’s biggest system hog and it is well optimised (in the sense that the code runs well with no lag and decent load times), so a decent GPU isn’t a priority. It’ll probably be patched in when they are done releasing a near flawless worldwide release on 3 platforms. Compare that to BF4, which still doesn’t work on a basic level months after release.
I’ve never seen the v-sync or artifacting issues and i haven’t heard much about them. How widespread is it? Regardless, that’s more than likely a driver issue on the manufacturer end. Not an optimisation problem.
The fonts are fine? It’s not like they take up the whole screen. Bethesda games have that issue, but I really don’t see this being a problem. Again, not really an optimisation issue because it doesn’t impact game operation at all. FO3, Oblivion etc had massive fonts that took up half the screen.
The melee is how the game is programmed. It’s a mechanical choice, not an optimisation issue. Like Battlefield 2 programming knife attacks as a short range bullet instead of a singing arc.
I get that the game has problems, but very little of that seems to be optimisation. It’s not like Dark Souls. That was a poorly optimised game. Keyboard and mouse didn’t work, resolution was locked, frame rate was locked, textures were huge and ugly, almost no graphical customisation options… By comparison, Titanfall is a paragon.
As far as I’m aware the v-sync artifacting and other graphical issues are fairly common. And just because a lack of a server browser has become standard doesn’t justify them not adding one.
Yes, Dark Souls is poorly optimised. The problems were alleviated somewhat with a few small user-created patches. It didn’t fix the K/M stuff though. All in all, I guess Titanfall isn’t too bad, I just wish they’d hurry up and fix those few little things and add some more awesome content.
Next titanfall PC patch is enabling 4k graphics?
Wait what? Ok cue bitching moaning about how no one’s system can run it lol
I’m already having a lot of loading between rounds lately (sometimes 6-7 mins!) which is driving me crazy. I’m hoping it just has to do with the server issues lately and will clear up.
In saying that, hopefully this update will stop those games where one side just completely dominates another. It’s boring for both sides.
Let me connect to an Australian server thanks. Not some stupid US server where I have 180 ping and 3/4 of my bullets don’t register. Until then I’ll keep using amped shotgun.
AUS server works pretty well now, and even if it didn’t, se Asia should get you about 80ms for WA or 130ms for east coast.
More loading between short 10 minute rounds….. Up the damn ticket count….
True, matches rarely last more than ten minutes. Having said that, I have played a few games where the balance was absolutely flawless. It was neck and neck the whole time with my team pulling ahead at the last minute to win by ONE point. Probably the best match I’ve had yet.
I don’t like this. I mean sure I got put up against players who destroyed me, but I like it cause I found myself adapting my strategies and builds.
A lot of the times I was put in matches where I dominated and got bored. So I don’t know. If I lose 10 times in a row I want the option to change groups, not be forced to change groups.
I prefer it, I’m sick and tired of baddies both in solo and groups.
When I solo play, I play to win. So when we lose and I see not one but TWO of my team mates with 0 pilot kills and 10 odd deaths I get rather peeved and am forced to drop group. This isn’t even a rare occurrence it usually takes me 5 odd matches before I get a team that doesn’t blow serious chunks and then we get maybe one or 2 tight matches (which are the most fun) before everyone leaves again and I have to repeat.
In group matches its even more annoying, when you group up, 9/10 times you utterly destroy your competition and everyone leaves which means you spend more time searching and waiting for games than you do playing.
I think your opinion about liking to lose 10 times in a row would be such a minority people could call it extremist 😛
I don’t like to lose. I like to improve. As soon as I start winning. 10 times in a row has more than shown the point that I’m good enough, and I just quit because it gets boring and ends up being too easy. The fun is in conquering the challange. If there is no challange, there is no fun.
It’s rare I find a team that firstly talks, secondly listens and thirdly works well. This new change makes Titanfall even more of a single player experience for me than it already is.
Are the au servers down?
