We all figured that Bungie would begin to take steps to fix Destiny’s flawed loot system. Good news: The first big changes come next week.
In a new update at the Destiny blog, the game’s developers say that after next week’s 1.0.2 patch, rare and legendary engrams will always decode to an item that’s at least rare or legendary quality, respectively. Meaning: No more decoding a legendary purple engram only to get a useless blue item. Hooray!
In addition, weekly and daily heroic strike missions will add rare and legendary items to their existing rewards, meaning that there’ll be more incentive to do those strikes and not, say, stand in front of a cave or something.
Here’s the full list of coming tweaks, per Bungie:
The 1.0.2 patch will go live next week, and includes several changes to the Cryptarch and Engram experience. These changes guarantee that Engrams will always decode into items at or above the quality of an engram.
Only Engrams that drop after 1.0.2 are subject to this change.
Cryptarch Changes
Cayde-6 took the Cryptarch aside and showed him a sack of doorknobs. He decoded that mystery pretty quickly.
- Legendary Engrams will always produce Legendary or better quality items, including Materials or Exotics
- Rare Engrams will always produce Rare or better quality items
- Rare engrams will have an increased chance to produce Legendary quality items
Activity Changes
- Daily Heroics, Weekly Heroics, and Vanguard: Tiger Playlist activities will include Rare and Legendary Engrams in addition to their existing rewards
- Ascendant materials have been promoted to Legendary to closer associate them with the gear they are used to upgrade
- Legendary Engram items that exist in your inventory will be demoted to Rare quality when the patch goes live, so decode them while you can. But let’s be honest — even if you don’t, we all know they were blues already…
It doesn’t quite make up for the all the times the Cryptarch screwed us over, but it’s nice to know that no one else will have to suffer in the future.

I must have been the only guy the Cryptarch never screwed over. Of the 2 legendary engrams I’ve found both ended up being legendary armour (for my class) and twice I’ve had blue engrams give me purple gear.
All my friends on the other hand…
You there, I don’t like you….
I feel bad also, I’m sitting on about 75% for getting legendary items from legendary engrams. I always felt really guilty cause my friends lacked my luck. I’ve also never felt the sting of getting an item for another class either. Not to mention I never doubled up on armour (getting a helmet when you’ve already got a helmet). I’m also on to my 3rd exotic bounty. I’ve harboured quite a lot of ‘survivors guilt’ over this actually, because other people have been screwed over so much.
HACKER!!!! 😛
Got my first Purple engram last night. I literally crossed my fingers, and close my eyes in prayer before I press the button. Success!
I’ve had one blue engram turn into a legendary weapon. My luck doesn’t carry over to my purple engrams though. Out of the last ten I’ve gotten, of which about five of those came my way last night alone, one was a duplicate of sniper rifle I already have (which still came in handy for ascendant energy upon dismantling), two were armour for each of the other classes (fine if I decide to get those characters up to level 20) and the rest were either blue items or the more useful strange coins.
I hate you also, I’ve had about 10 purple drops and all turned to blues up untill patch today >.
They should go the whole hog and make sure the items are for your class and have stats that help your chosen subclass. D3 loot 2.0 style.
That revised loot system in D3 completely improved upon the game, IMHO. It is such a better game for making the changes 😀
Haha love the humor about the cryptarch in the patch notes… Made me giggle
They shouldn’t make the chance of a legendary from a blue engram higher, they should replace that with a chance of getting rare upgrade materials. Say if there’s currently a 2% chance of getting a legendary and it’s going to be increased to 4%, make it a roll of 99 or 100 still gets you a legendary but 97 or 98 gets you ascendant shards or energy. They only way to get those that I’ve seen is dismantling legendaries or sometimes doing public events, since they stopped you getting them from the queen’s legendary gear to stop farming, they’re even harder to get so having a rare material pop from an engram would be a welcome change.
Also, they really need to nerf the legendary drop rate for players with the username @longjocks
I’m with you on that… the first bit that is, arse.
I’m actually not entirely against the chance of getting a lower tier item from an engram, the main problem came from how high a chance it seemed, especially since obtaining them is usually such a rare thing in the first place. You face two sets of large odds to obtain them. If only a couple of my purple engrams ended up as blue items I’d have shrugged it off, but when most of them are, that’s another thing.
Good timing. Just hit level 20 this morning and haven’t found any legendaries yet. Hoping I don’t get screwed before this is implemented.
I’ve had “good” luck with lengendary engrams. First was a void rocket launcher. Sweet! Second was… another void rocket launcher. Uh. Third was a pulse rifle. I don’t use those… forth was another pulse rifle. uuuugh. The fifth, that I got yesterday, was an arm piece of armour, so I was stoked about that though.
Has anyone been able to work out when the patch actually happens? I have a purple that I’ve been waiting to decode when I level up.
It doesn’t matter as the notes on Bungie’s website mention that when the patch drops all legendary engrams not yet decoded will be converted to rares anyway.
read the last bit, it will turn into a blue if you got it before the patch goes live
