This morning as the masses flooded into the Tokyo Game Show for the show’s first public day, I decided it was time to put my head through the giant boob hole and play the newest game about zombie-slaying, bikini-clad, busty babes: Onechanbara Z2 Chaos.
Over two years ago, I played the first Onechanbara Z, expecting it to be nothing more than terrible-playing fanservice fluff. However, I was surprised to find that it was actually a decent game that I enjoyed playing. So I found myself cautiously optimistic as I tried out the game’s demo — and even then I was surprised.
The Onechanbara Z2 Chaos demo is the exact same stage as the first level of Onechanbara Z — only now with PS4 level graphics. The layout is the same and so is the boss — and as far as I could tell, the normal enemies were too.
However, there were some notable differences. Namely, when the stage began, the other three Onechanbara protagonists attacked the zombies en masse along with the character I was controlling. It was so bright and flashy with all the concurrent attacks that I couldn’t even see what was going on. In fact, not being able to follow the action due to its over-the-top nature was a common problem I had in the demo even as my character continued on alone. However, following my own attacks did get more manageable as time went on.
In another change from the first Onechanbara Z, I was able to switch between all four characters on the fly, giving me more variety than I was expecting.
But what surprised me the most was how fluid it all felt to play. I felt like I was playing something on par with Devil May Cry or Bayonetta. There were a large variety of massive attacks that flowed easily into one another. The dash button also helped keep my attack chains going by automatically drawing me to the nearest enemy.
While I only got five minutes with Onechanbara Z2 Chaos, I can honestly say I am looking forward to it — and that’s not something I expected going in.
Onechanbara Z2 Chaos will be released in Japan for the PlayStation 4 on October 30, 2014. There is currently no word on an international release.
