Final Fantasy XIV Is The Best Final Fantasy In Years

Kirk's off this week, so today on Kotaku Splitscreen I'm joined by Mike Fahey to talk Final Fantasy XIV, 7th Dragon III Code VFD, and fanservice games. Also: the story of why he wasn't allowed to go to the Tokyo Game Show.

Seriously, guys, if you're into JRPGs and have the time/money, Final Fantasy XIV is well worth it. Earlier this week I finished up the last of the post-main story stuff and it gets really, really good. From what I hear, Heavensward's story is even better, so I'm pretty stoked for that too.

You can listen to today's episode on iTunes or Google Play, or get it directly on Simplecast right here. (MP3 download here.) As always, you can reach us at [email protected] with all questions, comments, and wonderful anime fan-art.

Final Fantasy XIV Is The Best Final Fantasy In Years

Yeah, because Ff13 set the bar so high...

It's just a rumour but I think there were some other final fantasy games released over the years.

It's easily the best because most if not all in the past decade have been on the lower end of the quality spectrum. Even half of the re-releases suffer from issues.

However, FFXIV is terrible in it's own right, especially as an MMO.
For a multiplayer game, it along with several other MMOs jerk hardcore on the single player stories, which is a fail-grade for any MMO.
Plus other things which I don't care to get into...

What do you mean by 'jerk hardcore on the single player stories'? Only Coil was the hardcore raid with a story. Everything else is extremely casual friendly (or at least requires some thought, in the case with the Final Steps of Faith).

Jerk hardcore, as in go excessive with. In other words I'm saying that there's a lot of anti-social single player aspects to these "multiplayer" games.

Sorry for the confusion, probably wasn't the best expression to use, haha.

Ah, gotcha. Yeah, that's my main issue with FFXIV as well. You would think they'd let you form a party with friends to do the story instanced fights (they'd just need to boost the HP of the enemies to match the amount of players joining, so it's not over too quickly), but nope .-.
