Doesn’t sound like Nintendo thinks Mario is a good VR fit. Shigeru Miyamoto recently told USA Today, “I would agree that adapting Mario to new platforms is a key to keeping him relevant. But we want families to play together, and virtual reality doesn’t really fit well there. We also like people playing for a long time, and it’s hard to do that in VR.”

That’s exactly it. During the halcyon days of Xbox Live, online and multiplayer experiences were all we were supposed to be caring about. It sapped a lot of PC-only people to boot. Single-player experiences were almost completely ignored by the big PR guns.
Now, the table has turned, and everybody is telling me I need to care about VR. There’s never been a single-player game like VR, essentially. I worry this isn’t be called out more.
It’ll never happen, but for once, to see the wider industry and reporting media at large to be singing in tune with whatever cockamamie idea Nintendo is flogging at the time, would be very interesting. Bizarro World.
HAHA trying seeing some guy trying to do wall jumps and back flips would be hilarious (and yelling WAHOOO is compulsory). Mario VR broke my SPINE !
Mario has done a lot of things. He’s starred in RPGs, platformers, competed in the olympics, thrown wild parties and puzzled with dragons. Heck, Mario was even a typing teacher at one point and now he’s got a one button endless runner game coming. Mario in VR really isn’t that difficult to justify nor come up with a concept for. It’s probably more that Nintendo is only just starting to figure out this whole “mobile” thing and VR is still a little too technologically futuristic for them.
They are definitely playing around with it but don’t think it’s reached the mass market point yet. It may next year, the PS4 VR thing will help. It may end up going the way of 3D TV though.
