There were a lot of frustrations to be had in old Sierra adventure games, but one of the worst was the way the games always made you traverse treacherous stairs, with one wrong keypress killing you instantly. So, yeah, here’s a game just about that.
It’s called Stair Quest, and it’s a painstaking recreation of the look, feel and sound of old Sierra adventures, only it’s almost entirely about walking around and inching your way across treacherous staircases (though yes, there is also text entry in the game).
Stair Quest was originally made for Adventure Jam 2016, but this version has been cleaned up a little and had some extra stages added.
If you want to try it out (or at least listen to the very faithful soundtrack) you can play it for free here.

Kings Quest Three, the mountain trail from the Wizard House. Nuff said. Please don’t make me relive that again.

Ugh, yes.
Also, KQ4 whale’s tongue.
Oh yes the whale tongue. I love the homage they do in Leisure Suit Larry 3 where they keep having to retake Rosella climbing it. Good times.
Type either “walk up stairs” or “walk up path”. King’s Quest III also hinted this quite a bit during play, about thinking a little longer on both complex puzzles and mundane tasks.
For the record I found out about that years after first finishing the game, and felt a little silly for missing it.
….and…. here i am just finding out about it now O_o… guess it pays to be attentive as a kid, which i wasn’t. Manuals… pffft… but now that i think about it, the manuals in those massive boxes in the old days were so much better quality with a bunch of stuff. Amazing how i took all of that for granted.
The Black Cauldron.
My god, that game made my 12-year-old self prepared for all the bullshit that comes with life.
