In Japanese, punching arcade cabinets is called “dai-pan” (台パン). Note that the term “gamen panchi” (画面パンチ), meaning “monitor punch” is sometimes also used, but also can refer to punching home TVs.
Dai-pan happens when folks get angry or frustrated while playing and physically lash out at the game, wrecking arcade property.

Not everyone is doing this! Do not think that. But dai-pan is still so famous among arcade players, that when they see a cabinet with its monitor covered by cardboard and an out of order sign, they immediately wonder if it’s been punched.

I blame OG Street Fighter for setting an unrealistic expectation that arcade machines like to be punched.
Oh the humanity!
I used to work at an arcade in the Western Suburbs of Melbourne for about 9 years, and the amount of vandalism and destruction we would get of our machines was disgraceful
And it wasn’t because the games were hard – its because these little losers had nothing better to do so they decide to destroy our machines. Punching in the monitors of the 50″ rear projection screens were the worst – because it wasn’t frustration that caused it – the button console was a meter away – it was just simple vandalism.
No matter what people do to arcade machines you should not destroy them because if you destroy them it will cost gaming arcades over $10,000 worth of damage to repair or replace them because if you’re seen on CCTV destroying an arcade machine they will be passing that footage onto the police for investigation and prosecution meaning you can be charged with criminal damage and vandalism.
So please do not destroy arcade machines they are coin operated machines for people to enjoy playing not for destroying because destroying an arcade machine means CCTV cameras are watching you and you will be identified and they will be passing that footage onto to the police.
