Boom Studios’ ongoing Steven Universe comic is the sort of series you can pick up casually even if you aren’t following the animated show’s epic space opera over on Cartoon Network. Each issue takes the time to tell a charming, character-driven story about Steven and the Gems in the downtime while they’re relaxing in Beach City.

In this week’s issue, #4, Steven, Amethyst and Peridot make their way to a local Renaissance Faire partially because Amethyst wants to pig out on turkey legs, but also because Steven wants to show Peridot how humans have fun. While the bulk of the issue focuses on how Peridot is repeatedly told that the more violent parts of the Faire (read: The weapons) are no place for a “cute” person like herself, the issue also features a subtle surprise for Yuri!!! On Ice fans.
Specifically, Yuri Katsuki, Victor Nikiforov, Yuri Plisetsky and Otabek Altin all make brief cameos in the background of panels as people who’ve also come out to the Faire on what appear to be dates.
Speaking to the Anime News Network about the pint-sized crossover, Steven Universe writer Katy Farina she admitted that she slipped the Yuri!!! characters in as a way to add something a little extra and fun to the book’s backgrounds. Farina also expressed her love of Yuri!!! and described how the series helped her find confidence in her personal life.
“When [Yuri!! On Ice] was airing, I was feeling so discouraged and unmotivated,” she said. “Watching Yuri work hard and learn to find confidence in himself inspired me to do the same. I think a lot of people can relate to that.”
