Your Name Anime Director On The Live-Action Hollywood Adaptation

The mega hit anime Your Name is going to be a Hollywood movie. What does Your Name creator Makoto Shinkai think about that? It’s kind of like your children leaving home.

When speaking at a recent press event, Shinkai talked about the Your Name adaptation. “I often compare my works to my children,” he said, “but I don’t have much interest in how my kids will turn out.”

“There was the announcement that Hollywood was making [a Your Name movie]. However, while at the same time looking forward to it, I felt like this was the beginning of a journey, and what kind of adult it would be was a question for the work itself.”

At a certain point, if you agree to a movie version, you just have to let go and hope it turns out well.

As previously reported, Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot are behind the live-action version, with J.J. Abrams, Lindsey Weber and Genki Kawamura (producer of the anime) producing. Eric Heisserer (Arrival) is writing, while the original film’s distributors Toho will also be helping out (and releasing the movie in Japan).

Welp.
