Takeaway Truth: McDonald's Chicken Big Mac

Takeaway Truth is an occasional feature where we compare marketing images against what you actually get served. Today: McDonald's Chicken Big Mac.

Last year, McDonald's briefly added the Chicken Big Mac to its official menu, legitimising a "secret hack" that customers had been enjoying for years. This week, the burger is once again available for a limited time.

As its name suggests, the Chicken Big Mac contains all the ingredients of a regular Big Mac but with the beef patties substituted for McChicken. It's been possible to enjoy this burger mashup as a bespoke order for years.

Here's the marketing description from Macca's:

Customers loved the Chicken Big Mac when it was on the menu, and Aussies have been asking for it to come back ever since. So from today, the Chicken Big Mac is returning to restaurants nationwide.

The Chicken Big Mac teams everything you know and love about our Big Mac - the Special Sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and sesame seed bun - with our famous Chicken pattie.

For lovers of burgers and fast food, the legend of the "secret menu" is a tantalising one, promising a secret club of tasty, cheap and ridiculously over the top food. Only one fast food outlet has openly confirmed having a secret menu — and that's the infamous In-N-Out, which is sadly not available outside of the US (unless you make your own). So how do we go for secret menus here, in the land down under?

We picked up one of these burgers from a McDonald's outlet in Sydney's Westfield. Here's how the real thing compares to the image on McDonald's website:

As always, the kitchen hand who made our burger did a pretty slipshod job of putting the ingredients together. Nevertheless, this isn't the worst likeness we've ever seen.

For perhaps the first time ever, the advert's oversized, bun-dwarfing patties actually have similar dimensions in real life. (Usually, this is just a trick of perspective.) So well done on that score, we guess. If a modicum of effort had been put into the assembly, this could have scored higher.

    How does it actually taste?

It's okay. I think the main issue for me is the cheese combined with the chicken crumb. It just doesn't taste good to me.

If I got it again it would be without cheese.

If it's not amazing, I probably would not bother trying it. Bring out something good McD. KFC has been kicking your butt.

Yeah, cheese and chicken are two things that I just cannot tolerate together under any circumstances. Separately, I have no problem with either, but I've never encountered any dish that made them work well together.

About the closest I've got is BBQ chicken pizza, and that's just because the BBQ sauce tends to be so overpowering that I can't actually taste either the chicken or the cheese.

          Chicken Parmigiana?

I go for the steak everytime unless they have some sort of mexican salsa parmi, then I will get it maybe 10% of the time.

The chicken parmigiana would like a word with you.

Mmm yeah, I guess. I mean I don't love it, but it's edible.

Red Rooster's cheesy chicken nuggets tho. Oh and parmigiana!

I rather like them, but they always put me into a serious food coma.

I found it smelled really off-putting for some reason, taste wasn't great either - not helped by the tough, dry chicken patties. Left me with an overall feeling of regret.

Meh. Not terrible, but the whole is certainly less than the sum of its parts.

i personaly find them to be pretty bland. maccas chicken really isnt that great.

THAT IS NOT A BIG MAC! This is a BIG MAC: Two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun!!!!!
