Another year another massive blockbuster launch for the Call of Duty franchise. But, according to one analyst the unit sales of Call of Duty games are down year on year, and Black Ops 2’s sales may be down as much as 15%.
“We believe unit sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops II are tracking down double digits year-over-year,” Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia told Games Industry International. “Our checks show initial sales of CoD: Black Ops II at some retailers were down as much as 20 percent. Subsequently, it appears sales of CoD did pick up a bit over the Thanksgiving holiday. We think the current sales curve suggests CoD: Black Ops II unit sales in its first year could ultimately be down 10 percent to 15 percent year-over-year.”
There is the possibility that the release of Halo 4 had an impact on sales, and the slow decline of retail in general, so it doesn’t necessarily reflect increasing disinterest in Call of Duty, but it is interesting to note.
