Arcane Legends’ Latest Expansion Adds Pirates, Sharks And Pirate Sharks

I’ve never been a big fan of sharks in massively multiplayer online role-playing games, something to do with the giant, deadly bastard that used to swim in the harbour outside Freeport in EverQuest. I’ve never really warmed to pirates either, falling on the ninja side of that age-old debate.

Combine the two and you’ve got a compelling reason for me to stay away from Arcane Legends‘ Kraken Isles expansion, out today on iOS, Android and the Google Chrome store. A reason neatly trumped by a special Kotaku-exclusive weapon for new players, I might add.

Along with the shark pirates and their corresponding adventure areas (as if you needed anything else), the latest update to Spacetime Studios’ latest free-to-play mobile/browser MMO brings a slew of enhancements and new features to the game. They’ve raised the level cap from 21 to 26. They’ve added boat travel. There are pirate-themed armour and weapons to be had, new Mythic and Arcane items (they say they’re the most powerful ever), and new stat-enhancing pets (now usable in PVP combat), including a Toucan and Monkey. Haven’t you always wanted a monkey?

That’s all well and good for existing players, but what about the newbies? That’s where the Kotaku-exclusive code comes in. It’s good for a nifty starting weapon that adds flair and power to your character, both equally important things.

Here’s how you get it:

• Download and play Arcane Legends on iOS, Google Play or via Chrome. (this step really helps)
• Create your character (also helpful)
• Play through the introductory area (you kinda have to)
• Once you enter the town of Windmoore (you’ll see other people running around) tap or click on the chat window to open up the chat interface
• Type /promocode kotakukraken

Presto! You now have a weapon that looks like this, if you’re a rogue:

This, if you’re a warrior:

And this, if you’re a showboating sorcerer type:

The Kraken Isles expansion should be live this afternoon across all platforms. It looks a whole lot like the screens I’ve dropped below this sentence.
