Despite being a phenomenon across the Western world these past three years, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic didn’t make its way to Japanese shores until last Tuesday. We showed you the Japanese theme songs, but that doesn’t answer the real question on everyone’s minds: What do the ponies sound like in Japanese?
Well, we’ve put together a little video to satisfy your curiosity.
The Japanese version of Friendship is Magic brings a score of popular voice actresses into the roles of the ponies. Twilight Sparkle is played by Miyuki Sawashiro (Fujiko Mine in Lupin III, Kira Kosuke in Btooom! ). Fluttershy is in turn voiced by Emiri Kato (Kyubey in Madoka Magica, Mayoi Hachikuji in Bakemonogatari).
The rest of the “mane six” are played by the cast of anime Milky Holmes with Rainbow Dash played by Izumi Kitta, Apple Jack by Sora Tokui, Rarity by Mikoi Sasaki, and Pinky Pie by Suzuko Mimori — who also sings the theme song.
And for those fans of everyone’s favourite sisterly deity duo, Nightmare Moon and Princess Celestia are played by Takako Honda (Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider series) and Kikuko Inoue (Belldandy in Oh My Goddess!; The Boss, Sunny, and Rose in the Metal Gear series) respectively.
Check out the video above to see Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Apple Jack, Rarity, Pinky Pie, Nightmare Moon and Princess Celestia in all their Japanese glory.
