$2,019,002. That’s the current prize pool for 2013’s Dota 2 International tournament, which will be held this August in Seattle.
It’s a massive payout — the biggest single-event prize pool in the history of competitive gaming — and it’s only possible because of crowdfunding. See, Valve is selling Interactive Compendiums for their big event; for $US10 you get an interactive guide to the tournament, which Valve calls “the next best thing to being there,” and $US2.50 of your contribution goes to the prize pool.
Dota 2, a multiplayer online battle arena game in which players pick heroes and fight in 5-on-5 team skirmishes for control of large battlefields, has become massively popular over the past two years — and it’s not even out of beta yet.

League of Legends season 2… the final prize pool was $2.000.000, the Season prize pool was $5,000,000 so um… Yea?
League is not a game, its a toy for kids.
“Single Event” so um.. Yea?
Season prize pool and single-event prize pool are different things.
Let’s see if you can spot the difference.
Yes, and it seems that DOTA season prize pool is a little bigger than the LoL Finals prize pool.
That’s not the season pool, that 2 mill plus is from the International, and the International only.
DON’T WORRY GUYS! I see what’s going on. So yea, the prize is only 19k in excess of last year’s LoL Tourney. All is right in the world now.
(misclicked so I’ll just edit in a tag instead of reposting as a reply @Arinir)
The difference was that The International runs for a weekend, similar to LoL’s Season Finals. That’s why the two are being compared, since the prize pool comparison doesn’t make sense if you’re comparing a weekend event to a year-long one.
